Linn county supervisors canceled the 1938 39 relief coal contract with Kenwood Park Fuel Cedar Rapids after a six day records review. The decision cited unsatisfactory service and missing coal deliveries. Nie documented five under deliveries and two half ton partials with full ton payments. Remaining season orders will go to any firm that signs a vendor agreement to follow delivery rules.
James Williams 68 of Center Point was injured when he collided with a car driven by Garland McCalley of Walker on Highway 11 Friday around 5 25 pm. Williams who has poor vision started across the road and ran into the other vehicle. Williams was knocked unconscious then revived. he suffered a scalp wound facial cuts and bruises. The McCalley windshield was broken.

A six room home fire in Ottumwa Saturday morning claimed the life of Charles Helmick 41 and five of his children Lola and Leota 12 Donald 8 Helen 7 Darrell 4. Three other children remain hospitalized Joe 10 Junior 11 and infant Max one month old. The mother Mrs Helmick 37 and sons William 20 Wayne 17 survived with minor injuries. Fire started in the kitchen from a kerosene explosion as firefighters battled crowds and fought to save the structure.
Three month old Milo Trpkosh escaped injury when a car driven by Mrs Milo Trpkosh left the Ely road and overturned a half mile east of Union school. His mother and two daughters suffered injuries. Catherine Mary may have a skull fracture. All were taken to Mercy hospital. sheriff and police investigated.
