Iowa farmers plant corn as acreage dips slightly
Iowa farmers have begun planting this year's corn crop in a year expected to be smaller than 2014 as some switch to soybeans to boost income. The USDA reports 7 percent of acres planted, four days ahead of last year and near the five year average, with 13.6 million acres of corn and 10.1 million acres of soybeans forecast. Topsoil and subsoil moisture levels show varied conditions while pastures improve and cows move to pasture. Secretary Bill Northey welcomed the weekend rain as soil moisture and pastures recover.
