Forage Outlook Urges Emergency Feed Increase Measures
Moline warns of serious feed supply problems and calls for an emergency program to boost home grown forage. Proposals include seeding small grains in permanent pastures, overseeding legumes, planting summer annual forage crops, fertilizing pastures, better grazing management, storing surplus forage, and expanding use of idle silos. FTC probe urged for food industry concentration
Consumer leader Carol Foreman called for a special $10 million FTC investigation into concentration in the food industry. She noted the 21 percent rise in the farm retail price spread in 1974 versus an 8 percent average wage gain, despite cattle prices dropping 20.7 percent and beef prices down 7.1 percent. She cited profits at Safeway Kroger Pillsbury Del Monte and A E Staley to argue for more competition and warned of costs to farmers from limited competition in farm machinery and animal feed sectors.

The decision targets small operations under 1,000 cattle or 2,500 hogs and overturns EPA exemptions granted two years earlier. The ruling, if not reversed, affects hundreds to thousands of Iowa feedlots and others in livestock states.
