High winds and blowing snow delay search after last contact 1000 miles north of Thule. base listed as Argentia Newfoundland.
The government reports a dip in living costs for March, the second straight monthly decline, with lower food and clothing prices pulling the index to 114.8 percent of the 1947-49 average. The Bureau of Labor Statistics index eased by two tenths of one percent from February.
Jacob G Pauba 85 a Cedar Rapids resident for 61 years and Continental Oil Co employee for 15 years died at home after a brief illness. Born February 6 1876 in Solon he married Emma Struesky in 1901. Surviving include his wife a son in Cedar Rapids a daughter in Denver a sister two brothers and four grandchildren. He belonged to Grace Episcopal Church several fraternal and civic groups. A requiem high mass will be said Friday at Grace Episcopal Church. Funeral arrangements to be announced. Friends may call Turner chapel after 1 p.m. Friday.
James F. Donohue 60 of 420 Seventeenth Street SE died in a Cedar Rapids hospital Wednesday. Born at Morse April 21, 1894 he lived most of his life in Johnson County and was a machinist affiliated with Immaculate Conception church. Surviving: wife, mother Mrs J Donohue of Morse, daughter Mrs Dean Nordmann of Cedar Rapids, six siblings Dan Carl Joseph of Morse Robert of Cedar Rapids Clement of Iowa City, sister Mrs Mary Marshek of Solon, and a granddaughter. Services at Immaculate Conception church Saturday at 10 a.m. Rt Rev Msgr William H Schulte to preside. Burial Mt Calvary. Msgr Schulte to recite Rosary Friday 7:30 p.m. at Teahen chapel. friends may call after 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
William R Bachmann a lifelong Cedar Rapids resident and World War I veteran died in a Cedar Rapids hospital at 9 05 p m Wednesday after a long illness Born February 4 1898 he married Alma Hanson on June 9 1925 in Tipton He is survived by a sister Mrs Wesley Melhouse of Waterloo and a brother Robert J Bachmann of Cedar Rapids Burial will be in Shiloh cemetery Services will be at Trinity Lutheran church Saturday at 1 30 p m conducted by Pastor E H Idmann Friends may call at Turner mortuary until noon Saturday
A Des Moines report says five Iowa amateur radio operators aboard a drifting schooner off Mexico hope to reach Clipper ton island to transmit the first amateur shortwave broadcast from the uninhabited isle. A Mexican coast guard destroyer and two other boats race to assist as current pushes the vessel away. crew includes Newton men Robert Denniston Gene O’Leary Tom Partridge Vern Hedman and Leo Olney.
Federal jurors were ordered to report Monday at 10 a.m. in the Cedar Rapids post office building for an intermediate court session. Three hearings are listed including two jury trials with cases involving Navajo Freight Line versus DeKalb Agricultural Association and Carson Pirie Scott & Company against Homemakers House of Cedar Rapids. A 10 p.m. motion hearing is set in the Heintze case Cedar Rapids versus Dallas and Mavis Forwarding Company of South Bend.

A $1,000 damage suit with jury trial requested was filed in municipal court on behalf of 13 year old Ann Garvey who says she was dragged by a car on Third avenue SE. The suit names Hiltbrunner Music Co and driver Curtis Hiltbrunner, alleging severe mental and physical pain and permanent nervous- system injury from the March 31, 1953 incident. A six person jury will hear the case unless a 12 member panel is requested.
Allan Dunek, 12, of Cedar Rapids, who ran away Tuesday saying Daddy does not like me, was found Thursday morning in Iowa City near the airport after two nights outdoors with his dog Blondie. He walked from home, spent a night in a field, and ate one hamburger. Police fed him pancakes, then returned him to his parents.
Des Moines AP sentencing of James John Byrnes 26 for stealing an 8500 airplane at Des Moines Municipal Airport on March 9 and flying to Olathe Kansas is set for Friday morning in federal district court Byrnes pled guilty April 14 to two counts one for crossing state lines with a stolen plane and another for driving a stolen auto to Corcoran California and back to Des Moines Maximum penalties are five years imprisonment and a 5000 fine per count Judge Riley postponed sentencing to allow time for a federal probation officer to complete a report.

Geraldine Schroeder of Cedar Rapids filed suit against F W Woolworth Company for 10039 claiming injuries June 3 1953 at the Cedar Rapids store. She says her left hand was caught between a door and casing leading to amputation of the end of the second finger and that she has been unable to perform normal duties or play piano since.
Airman Jerome F. Prochaska son of Mrs Beulah Prochaska 363 Thirtieth street SE has been appointed to the U S Military Academy at West Point The appointment was announced Thursday by Rep Henry O Talle of Decorah Prochaska has attended the West Point prep school at Stewart Air Force Base near Newburgh N Y Talle said he nominated Prochaska earlier in the year and the youth has just completed his entrance examinations.

Central City school board filed suit in county district court to reverse a March 25 boundary ruling by the county board of education for a proposed Marion community district merger. Plaintiffs include board members Leonard Murdoch Willard Goodlove E J Sehl L V Nietert Seth Albin Grace Weaver and Kenneth Weaver. Defendant also includes County Superintendent Walter A Shupp. The petition alleges illegal boundary setup affecting the merger proposal which would include parts of Central City and surrounding areas.
A lawsuit seeks judicial review of the Marion boundary plan linked to an Alburnett merger. The Central City board petitions the district court for a writ of certiorari to reverse the Marion boundaries and halt further merger steps, alleging improper hearings and process under Iowa school law.

Harold Bascom of Palo pled guilty to uttering a forged instrument and received a suspended sentence not to exceed 10 years at the Anamosa reformatory. Judge Charles Penningroth released him to the Iowa Board of Parole as Cedar Rapids detectives arrested him Wednesday. Bascom allegedly passed a forged 275.75 dollar check to Culver Motor Company using the signature of Howard Livermore.
Robert O'Hara aged 31 of Coggon was held in Linn County jail on a false check charge. He was arrested Wednesday night in Coggon and accused of writing a false $20 check in Linn County last November.
The will of Mabel Lybarger who died April 7 was admitted to probate Thursday. It names her children Irene DuBois and Paul Lybarger as equal heirs and executors without bond.
Four suits were filed in the week, Del Que Farm Service Company suing Mrs. Clyde Dunlap for 632.40 on a check, Public Finance Company suing Emery A. Gleason for 234.95 on a promissory note, Motors Insurance Corporation and Violet Murphy suing Edward Lawrence for 388.75 on a promissory note, and Adolph W. Sramek suing Henry Lund for 200 on an account. Mercy hospital Thursday won a 199 judgment against Melvin and Sandra Comried in an account suit.
