The 23rd annual Tony Awards honored The Great White Hope as best play, based on Jack Johnson, and 1776 as best musical about the Declaration of Independence. James Earl Jones and Julie Harris led acting winners, with Angela Lansbury and Jerry Orbach among honored stars. Olivier, Burnett, Bernstein, and the Negro Ensemble Company received special citations as the telecast aired on NBC hosted by Alan King and Diahann Carroll.

20th Century-Fox to film Irving Wallace novel 7 Minutes

Hollywood gains movie rights to Irving Wallace's novel 7 Minutes about an obscenity trial. Richard Fleischer will produce and direct. Filming set in Hollywood Boston and Washington D C. The work, acquired in galley form, will be published early this summer.
