Rural electric coops win safety awards at Des Moines meet

Thirty eight rural electric cooperatives and municipal utilities received safety awards at the 16th annual state superintendent and foreman conference in Des Moines. Kenneth Moore of the Town Association of Electric Cooperatives announced 32 awards for the year and listed recipients including Amana Society Service Co. in Amana, Benton County REC in Vinton, Buchanan County REC in Independence, Buller County REC in Allison, Cedar Valley Electric Cooperative in St Ansgar, Pella Cooperative Electric Assn. in Pella, TLP REC in Brooklyn, Central Town Power Cooperative in Marion, and Waverly Municipal Light Plant in Waverly, with years of safe work noted for each.

Rural FHA Housing Loan Meeting Set

On Wednesday, April 22, at 7:30 p.m., a meeting will be held at North Linn High School, Troy Mills, by Farmers Home Administration representatives serving Buchanan, Delaware and Linn counties. Kenneth Bower of Des Moines will discuss FHA loans for rural home construction, remodeling, or purchase, plus the rural rental housing program and regular housing program. The meeting is open to the public and invites builders and individuals connected with the building trade.

Referendum Sought On Beef Promotion Tax Bill

Des Moines Iowa lawmakers moved a bill to impose a cattle excise tax to fund beef promotion and marketing. The measure sets 10 cent on cattle and 5 cent on calves, with refunds on written request. It authorizes 30 percent to the Beef Producers Association and portions to the National Livestock and Meat Board, and now requires a referendum before tax implementation.

West Liberty vocational instructor Richard Wehde announced Vincent brothers from West Branch won the carcass championship with a 200 pound hog.
