The Trinity reported an 18 ton iceberg spotted 300 miles off Cape Canaveral Florida as ships in the Atlantic were warned to watch for ice. The weather bureau could not explain how it drifted so far south.
At the United Nations Andrei Vishinsky declared the Soviet Union had built the hydrogen bomb but demands a ban on all atomic and hydrogen weapons. He warned any arms control accord is unlikely without Red China, India, and Czechoslovakia joining a subcommittee, and criticized the Baruch plan as obsolete.
A 21 month old boy sustained minor head abrasions after an incident near the Wendy Oaks trailer court east of Cedar Rapids on Mt. Vernon road. Deputy Condon noted uncertainty over whether the child was struck by a car driven by Mrs. Jack Nemecek. The child, son of Mr. and Mrs. David Yeoman, was treated at Mercy hospital and released. The accident occurred around 11 30 a.m.
Des Moines AP report states the radio communications division of the state safety department won Council approval to invite bids for a highway patrol repeater station and related gear in northeastern Iowa. Director Boyd F. Porter cited obsolete current equipment. The council also authorized bids for five cars, three trucks for several departments, and two liquor control semi-trailers.
Cedar Rapids police seek the owner of 64 keys found wired together in an alley between B and Hinkley avenues NW at Fifteenth Street. Detective Capt. John Kuba said the set comprises 32 pairs likely for lockers. Owners may claim them at the detective bureau.
In Alamosa Colorado Mrs Arthur Cox delivered her fifth child a daughter and received more than 5000 pennies from her family doctor as a quirky congratulatory gesture reflecting local custom and humor.
Louis Becicka 73 a lifelong Swisher resident and retired carpenter died at 10:50 a.m. Monday at his sister's Swisher home. Born November 17, 1880 near Swisher, he leaves two sons George Cedar Rapids and Leonard Mt. Vernon, three sisters Mary Buresh Anna Simon and Mrs Smahel of Swisher, two brothers Jerry Ely and Joseph near Solon, four grandchildren. Services Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Brosh chapel Cedar Rapids with Rev Z F Pauk of Hus Memorial Presbyterian church. Burial in Shueyville cemetery. Friends may call chapel after 3 p.m. Tuesday.
Edward J. Lortscher 52 of 1402 Second Avenue SE died Sunday in Aitkin Minnesota after a Cedar Rapids career as a salesman for 30 years with U S Line Company. Born in What Cheer he formerly lived in Belle Plaine and Dubuque and is survived by his wife and three sisters Mrs Ted Alexander Montezuma Mrs Ben Dietz and Dot Lortscher Davenport. Services Tuesday at 2 p m at Peffers Funeral Home Belle Plaine burial Oak Hill Cemetery Belle Plaine.
Cedar Rapids widow Mrs Victor T Peterson died Saturday after 19 years in the city. Services set for 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Turner chapel with Dr H M Grant. Burial at Cedar Memorial cemetery. Survived by husband a daughter Mrs Paul Anderson Cedar Rapids a son Elwayne Peterson Ellsworth and seven grandchildren. She belonged to Trinity Methodist church and was a graduate of Iowa State Teachers college.
Elizabeth Caldwell Potter widow of William Potter a Cedar Rapids native who moved to Long Beach California thirty years ago died there on Wednesday. Services will be at Beatty Bearle chapel at 1:20 p.m. Tuesday with Rev Gary Holt of Bertram Methodist church officiating. Burial will be in Campbell cemetery seven miles east of Cedar Rapids. Friends may call at the chapel.
Mrs Norbert Re zac aged 77 of Fourteenth Avenue SW Cedar Rapids died Saturday at her daughter Mrs Henry Spitznagle's home 1307 C Street SW Funeral services will be conducted in Brush chapel at 2 p.m. Tuesday by Rev Zdenek F Pauk Burial will be in Czech National cemetery.
Traffic toll continued report covers a mass teen safety meeting where 620 youths registered for an all day event seeking a statewide program led by teens. National Safety Council member Paul Hill urged responsible driving and 90 percent of attendees held licenses. Gov Beardsley and wife hosted a barbecue after the sessions.
Thirty two residents filed a counter petition with the city council opposing a proposed one hour parking limit on A avenue NE from Eighth to Tenth street. They urge maintaining the current system arguing hardship for residents and hospital visitors. The council referred the petitions to Police Chief Kudina for study and recommendations and received a request from St. Luke's hospital for traffic control in the area.

The committee voted to subpoena Powell to testify after his offer to appear only under compulsion. Powell resigned April 5, effective April 16, then resig- nation acceptance was rescinded amid disclosures of profiteering from homeowners. Eisenhower released tax returns to the committee, empowering inspection of income, excess profits, capital stock, estate and gift taxes in housing project programs.

A woman, Jeannette O. Streff, 27, pled innocent in district court to driving while intoxicated after a Saturday crash on 6th Avenue Northwest that damaged a slower vehicle. Bond was set at $500. Harold L. Crain, 43, pled guilty to a first offense drunk driving charge, with a $300 fine and payment plan. He was arrested January 30 and previously convicted May 29, 1950, in Linn County.
Finnis D. Ballard, 44, of the Pullman hotel, was sentenced to a term not to exceed 10 years in the Fort Madison state penitentiary after pleading guilty to uttering a forged instrument. He was arrested after passing a $25 check in a Cedar Rapids hardware store with Dr. Sherman Watson’s forged signature. Judge Charles Penningroth imposed the sentence.

The will of Pearl S. Ellison who died April 7 was admitted to probate Monday. Walter F. Ellison named sole heir. Their son Harold Ellison confirmed as executor without bond. Also noted Gibson pled innocent Jan. 29 and remains free on $2,000 bond from the Dec. 18 matter.
Sam Kacere on Monday was awarded a judgment of 235.08 against Louis Abdo for the remainder of an unpaid check and account.
Cedar Rapids Television Company elects Sutherland C. Dow s as president at the annual stockholders meeting in the Security building. Elected as officers are Harry G. O Donnell Joseph F. Hladley Jr William C. Culver Donald T. Hines Louis J. Nilles. Directors include William C. Crawford David E. Beardsley and Myron Blank. The firm owns KCRI TV and KCRI radio.
Jennison, 22, assigned to a reconnaissance squadron based at Argentia in winter and Patuxent River in summer, serves as an aerial photographer. A McKinley High School graduate, he enlisted after a year at Iowa State. He trained at San Diego, Jacksonville, and Pensacola, and attended photography school at Pensacola.
