Miss Brooks, named Drake relays queen for 1954, arrives in Des Moines with hostess Sandra Blymyer of Clarendon Hills IL. The queen and seven companions will attend convocation dinners dances and a Saturday parade with about 70 Iowa high school bands. She will stay in the Hotel Fort Des Moines presidential suite during the event.
Tele vision star Ed Sullivan will miss his role as grand marshal of the Drake Relays next Friday and Saturday because of a stomach ailment Drake University announced. Sullivan will stay in New York City, continuing his Toast of The Town program. Wes Santee and coach Bill Easton will appear on Sullivan's program April 25, with Harrison Dillard possibly taking part in a hurdles event at the relays.
Easter and Passover observed together only in 1923 1927 and will not recur until 1981. Widely held services across the United States marked Easter Sunday with sunrise rites and outdoor scenes backdrop by mountains and nature. A Spirit Lake man attempted to kill his wife, firing with a shotgun. she was critically wounded. Baker was jailed as the trial delayed for victim recovery. Remarried to his former wife, he moved venue to Storm Lake. his attorney challenged the move yet the state secured a guilty verdict and a 40 year sentence. An appeal is pending as deputies investigate. Baker was reportedly intoxicated when arrested.
Bonn says the economics ministry denies it is considering a cut to a five day 40 hour week amid West Germany’s booming industry. The ministry states no plan exists to reduce weekly hours at this time.
Cars owned by Logan County officials show eerie pits blamed on a chemical reaction after recent rains. In Canton an industrial chemist is called in as lab tests begin. Police say shots with sling shots and BB guns were tested by the child welfare chief, who notes the marks differ from those reported by motorists in three Ohio counties. The damage reportedly started in northern Washington and spread to British Columbia and Oregon before reaching Ohio.
City briefs list several Cedar Rapids clubs and events. The Festival Committee of the Cedar Rapids Junior Chamber meets Wednesday at 7 45 p m in the Chamber of Commerce building. Shuffleboard events feature finals and Monday night games at Kory Inn Shuffleboard Center. Friends in Cedar Rapids report the death of William Spencer 86 Saturday in Akeley Minnesota He was born July 28 1867 in Covington Iowa and lived there and in Cedar Rapids until about 40 years ago when he moved with his family to Nebraska and later Minnesota He was a farmer He married Myrtle Ribble June 28 1892 surviving are a son Emery at home a daughter Mrs Esther Kehne and three grandsons The Spencers celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 1952 at Akeley Funeral services will be held at Akeley Tuesday.
Clarence J. Grissel, a Cedar Rapids resident of 603 Second Street SW for 64 years, died Saturday. Services will be held at 3 30 p.m. Monday in Turner chapel with Rev. J. Richard Wagner from First Congregational Church and Crescent lodge A F and A M. burial in Linwood Cemetery. Friends may call at the chapel. World War I veteran and Cedar Rapids lifelong resident George Edward Dennis died Friday. Funeral services are set for 1 30 p m Monday at Turner chapel with Rev Ralph Colton of Sinclair Memorial church officiating. Burial will be in Cedar Memorial cemetery. Friends may call at the chapel.

A long time official who knew Oppenheimer since 1948 described him as cooperative and impressive under questioning. He later reviewed the full file and called the problem extremely difficult, saying Oppenheimer is a loyal American, but the voluminous file raises a prima facie security risk. The spokesman was later identified as Vice President Richard M. Nixon by James Reston.
AIKEN Minn E S Lortscher 51 of Cedar Rapids Iowa was found shot to death in his cabin on Waukenaba lake Saturday. Deputy Coroner William Hudson said the wound appeared to be self defense related. Sheriff James Smith was informed as Lortscher stayed alone in the cabin. Mrs Lortscher was visiting a sister in Vinton when informed.
