Farm speech winners urge soil care and energy cuts in Iowa
In Marion, Farm Bureau speech winner Susan Beichley warned Iowa farmers that topsoil is vanishing faster than it forms, with up to 26 bushels of soil lost per bushel of soybeans on sloped land. She cited 100 years of erosion reducing topsoil from 14 to 16 inches to about 6 to 8 inches, urging costly erosion controls and soil stewardship. The second speaker Warren Bloom of Preston urged reducing production costs, highlighting wasteful use of corn cobs as fuel and criticizing market guides and subsidies, while promoting home raised calves and improved farm efficiency. He also criticized confinement hog buildings and questioned government roles in farming policy.
