A twin-engine Air U.S. plane bound for Gillette collided with a smaller skydiving craft near Loveland Colorado. Fifteen aboard the commuter plane and two skydivers died. Four skydivers parachuted to safety from about 8000 feet.
A Cedar Rapids firefighter rescued Toni Cooley 23 from a third floor apartment as smoke filled the Susanne Apartments basement fire at 1040 Third Ave SE around 9 p.m. Friday. Cooley escaped to a balcony and the cause of the blaze had not been determined by press time.
Washington officials say the Reagan administration likely will signal a lift or easing of the grain embargo if Soviet pressure in Poland continues to ease. Talks on limiting nuclear deployment in Europe may follow, tied to Soviet behavior, with April 27 as a pivotal deadline for decision.
Teamsters at ADM Corn Sweeteners in Cedar Rapids will vote Tuesday on a revised contract offer after four bargaining sessions. The union held a 7 am meeting at Teamsters Hall and has yet to disclose details or a ratification recommendation as talks continue amid a long strike and NLRB charges.
Robert Bear Salonic of Cedar Rapids died after his bicycle was struck by a van traveling northbound on Highway 13 two miles north of the Linn County Care Facility. The van driver Frank Collette and two passengers Judy Jenatscheck and Matthew Jenatscheck, all from rural Manchester, were treated and released at St Luke's Hospital. The incident remains under investigation. Salonic had been riding to Elkader and had opened Bear's Sandwich Shop nearby.
