New York opened its renovated ballpark with a dramatic 11 4 victory over Minnesota as Oscar Gamble hit a triple and Willie Randolph Lou Piniella and Otto Velez delivered key hits. Converse Takes Ellis Cage Title

Tim Kadlee scored 16 points to spark Converse to the Ellis YMCA ninth grade basketball tournament title with a 63-46 win over the Hawks. Scott Olinger and Dennis Huffer each had 13 for the Hawks. Ros Wiebold led the Celtics with 23 in a 57-55 consolation win over the Lancers. The Lancers beat the Hawkeyes 67-57 and the Celtics edged the Bombers 53-52 in consolation games.

Iowans Named For National Tennis Tournament of Champions

Four young Iowans Kay Rick Micki Schillig Joy Rabinowitz and Cheri Mixdorf will represent the state at the Tennis Tournament of Champions sponsored by Teen magazine next month. The event runs May 12 16 at Merrifield Virginia. They earned their spots by winning qualifying tournaments held last summer.
