Miller-Meeks denied by Iowa Senate Hawks board vote

Democrats blocked Gov. Branstad's choice Mariannette Miller-Meeks for a Hawks board post overseeing the children's health insurance program. The nomination failed 18 to 20 after 18 Democrats voted no, with 34 votes required for confirmation amid a broader confirmation day where 36 Branstad appointees were approved. Miller-Meeks, an ophthalmologist and former Health director, has a history in state government and elections against Dave Loebsack. Critics urged a member with strong health insurance program knowledge as Iowa shifts Medicaid toward private management.

Miller-Meeks confirmation blocked by Senate vote

Iowa Senate opposition frames Miller-Meeks as ill-suited for the health post amid partisan politics with Sen. Amanda Ragan and Sen. Herman Quirmbach voicing concerns while Sen. Charles Schneider defends her experience and past service. Senate GOP Leader Bill Dix condemns the outcome as partisan. Ben Hammes calls it D.C. style politics.
