President Eisenhower instructs Oveta Culp Hobby to conduct a nationwide survey to ensure fair distribution of the Salk polio vaccine, favoring voluntary methods and sharing data with the world while weighing export plans and domestic needs.
Cedar Rapids polio vaccination headquarters released the names of 54 pupils who had only two shots last year and may gain immunity with a booster this year. The list notes clerical errors affecting an additional 10 children who had the full series but were omitted.
The Gazette publishes a form to be filled by parents who want Salk polio vaccine shots for their children. Parents mail the form to their physicians who will notify when vaccine is available. The form covers first time receivers and boosters for those inoculated last year. The Medical Society recommends a $4 charge per shot.

Betty Harms 17 of Wyoming dies after a car driven by Robert James Smith 21 of Cedar Rapids crashes on highway 136 inside Wyoming. Smith faces manslaughter charge after waiving to the grand jury for drunk driving. Smith held on $4000 bond. fellow passenger Sharley Bearce 18 injured. Funeral services set for Saturday at Zion American Lutheran Church.
