Mrs Kenneth Blake of near Mt. Vernon enters her first bid for public office by seeking the Democratic nomination for county recorder. Born February 22, 1916, on a farm near Marshalltown, she attended public schools and Albion high school. She and her husband have three children and she works at the Mt. Vernon Hawkeye Record as a Christian Church member and longtime party worker.
Twenty one new cars were sold Tuesday as part of the You Auto Buy Now campaign run by thirteen Cedar Rapids dealers. Combined with Monday and Sunday activity, 66 used cars sold and 42 new cars sold over the period, with ads detailing car values in The Gazette.
Ce dar Rapids traffic officials warned that operating go karts on public streets will be prosecuted. Carts must be licensed and meet safety standards or owners may face arrest for unlicensed motor vehicle operation and driving without a license.
Walter J. French owner of the Walter J. French Co. paint store at 414 Third Ave SE has purchased the business buildings at 414 416 and 418 Third Ave SE from the estate of the late Fred H. Shaver. The sale was handled by John Zachar Jr. through Peoples Bank and Trust Co. as executors. The properties include three store rooms and current tenants, with an approximate price around $65,000.
The Linn county filing period closes with 28 candidates for 8 offices on file with Auditor Otto Hanzlik. Only two Republican nominations are uncontested while six of eight Democratic nominations face primary contests on June 6. All parties will field a candidate for each county office in the general election November 8.
Ralph R. Ash, 41, of Cedar Rapids Route 3, was found guilty by a district court jury of a fourth offense drunk driving. Sentencing set for April 21 by Judge Floyd Philbrick. Ash arrested March 5 after erratic driving on Mt. Vernon Road SE. prior Linn County DUI convictions in 1953, 1957 and 1958. Trial of Herman L. Ray, 21, of 103314 Tenth Ave SE, on forgery charges began in Philbrick's court with a jury chosen earlier this week.
A judge awarded $1,000 in damages to Sheryl Armstrong and her father Ralph Armstrong for injuries suffered when a car struck the girl on Highway 64 in Springville last November 1. Defendants were Robert J. Niebeck and Sandra Campbell. $500 each was awarded to the pair after a bench trial.
The will names Gent, a niece Max La Velle and a nephew Emma La Velle as heirs. Miss Nugent receives 3 diamond rings. The remainder goes to another nephew Carl La Velle. Merchants National Bank was appointed executor.
Sentenced in Marion County, Leo F. Shea of Alburnett pled guilty before Judge Charles Penningroth to cashing a false $50 check at a Marion gas station on March 11. He received a suspended six month jail sentence.
Center Point Church will receive 5000 dollars under the will of Maude E. Dunbar who died April 4. The will also provides additional 5000 dollars in bequests to Jean Nu.
Bryan Hinton files suit against Ralph Triplett of Ralphs Radio Repair for 2710 dollars claiming an oral agreement. The action seeks recovery of the stated amount under disputed terms with parties named and the business context explicit.
Dr. Reuben K. Youngdahl urged his First Presbyterian audience during Holy Week to choose a hopeful dawn over civilization’s end. He urged returning to God’s power, stressing the Father’s world and inner peace found only through faith. He warned against secular devices and called for communal walk with God.
An Air Force B 52G bomber flew 10 800 miles nonstop to the North Pole and back in 22 hours as a test for a Gam 77 Hound Dog missile. The six crewed mission refueled over the polar cap and Lake Superior, launched over Cape Canaveral, but did not fire the weapon. Capt. Jay McDonald led the Oklahoma City crew from Eglin Air Base Florida.

James D. Jordan of Mar ion route 1 filed papers as a Democratic candidate for the Second district Linn County supervisor. Born July 19, 1920 in Boulder Colorado he moved to Linn County at age four. He owns a 100 acre farm north of Cedar Rapids and has a background in military service the Agricultural Stabilization Corp and local farm groups. Jordan and his wife have three children Thomas Betty and Keith.
The siege of a gunman named Jennings ends after a final police assault. Negotiators Dr. Charles Zeller and Ray Carnay urged treatment and warned the suspect was cracking under strain. Barabara's sister and her parents supported the direct attack as officers prepared.
A man with an expired 1950 license crashed a car, suffering a forehead cut and extensive damage. Municipal Court Judge Donald P. Barnes admonished the salesman for permitting an unauthorized driver and ordered $30 salvage value from the car to fund a damaged parking meter. The defendant agreed to pay the meter from his next two pension checks.
Cedar Rapids street department asks public cooperation to avoid parking on First Avenue E between Fifth and 40th streets E for street cleaning. Sweepers will run Monday through Thursday in specified blocks with odd even calendar restrictions next week. Call EM 5-2988 to offer dump sites or volunteer locations for fill.
Warsaw reports Polish Vice-premier Jaroszewicz arrived Tuesday after a two week tour of the United States.
Senator Humphrey suggested a West Virginia victory by Senator Kennedy would ease Kennedy’s path to the Democratic nomination on the first convention ballot. He said he expects to win the May 10 primary himself and vowed to press on with 20 hour days in West Virginia. He noted a Kennedy nomination would be supported by him if it occurs and that he would back Morse in D C if he falters there.
Foreign ministers from the United States Britain France and West Germany reached a common approach for Berlin negotiations with Russia ahead of the Paris summit. They bridged differences to present a united front though West Germany opposes further talks and Britain favors adjustments to avert a crisis.
Funeral services for Mrs. Harry A. Chadwick were held Thursday at 3 p.m. at Turner Chapel conducted by Dr. H. Hughes Dill. Burial followed at Linwood Cemetery.
