Conn Says U S Food Bill Faces Farm Parity Challenge
Farm editor Rex Conn spoke at a High Twelve luncheon stating the major readjustment for agriculture is whether American consumers will pay fair prices. He noted parity for agriculture averaged 84 percent before the war, now 116, with subsidies totaling about 1.798 billion annually keeping prices low for consumers. Removal of subsidies would raise the grocery bill by around two billion dollars yearly, while price ceilings and parity guarantees complicate any shift before Jan 1, 1949. Major farm groups urge subsidy removal and higher prices to shield producers as incomes stay strong.
