Cedar Rapids elder Harlan Ketelsen, 81, of Concordia Lutheran Church, has carved more than 150,000 wooden crosses over 22 years from walnut wood. He distributes them to hospitals and abroad, praying with recipients and offering baptism when possible, saying the crosses carry a message of salvation. His garage holds 14,000 more awaiting delivery as he continues his ministry.
Churches use Passion performances to outreach with more realistic scenes. Jesus actors report stronger audience connection and emotional impact. The Nazarene and Assembly groups stage lengthy, music driven displays drawing hundreds of volunteers, with powerful effects and occasional unexpected reactions.
