Prices paid Saturday on the Cedar Rapids hog market were 25 percent higher. Thursday deliveries show butchers 200 to 230 pounds at 15.75 to 16.25, sow and heavier classes adjusted by weight. Lambs and sheep pricing listed, grain and egg quotes provided, Chicago Monday estimates note 6,000 cattle receipts.

Slaughter steers and slaughter heifers sold generally 50 cents higher per hundredweight in Chicago. Week's receipts totaled 10,700 head, with no sheep receipts. Prime 1,160 to 1,325 pound steers brought 35.25 to 35.75, one 1,225-pound load at 35.90, highest since June 1969. High and prime weights 1,100 to 1,350 pounds sold 34.25 to 35.25, others 32.00 to 33.00. Heifers 950 to 1,150 pounds 32.75 to 33.50, 825 to 1,025 pounds 31.50 to 33.00. Des Moines posts moderate trade, butchers and sows steady with some gains. District prices listed for various weight ranges.
AP reports Friday USDA Midwest carlot and town market activity shows beef steady to down marginally with steers 50 lower and heifers about steady. pork trade weakened due to Good Friday closings with loins 14 lbs and under at 39.00 to 39.50, picnics up about 50 cents, bellies 18 to 20 lbs about 19.50, and other pork cuts varying amid low volume.
Iowa Supreme Court, in a 6-2 decision, backs Denison maintenance workers at Iowa Beef Packers in their claim for compensation for work during unpaid lunch breaks. The ruling affirms that arbitration was not required before going to court, citing that the 30 minute lunch period existed more in name than in fact through much of the two year period.
Iowa Supreme Court found District Court Judge John Oberhausen erred in directing a verdict of acquittal for Frank Sebben in a fatal accident case. Sebben allegedly failed to stop and give assistance after striking Ernest Wilson on highway 20. The ruling stands for Lebben but is reversed regarding the failure to stop charge.
Firefighters from New London and Danville halted a grass fire that spread to 1000 acres of timber near New London. The blaze, started to burn a field, was fed by winds and kept from Goode State Park by crews who also saved a nearby farm and several structures.
Richard Zach 17 of rural Swisher died Thursday and will have 2 p m Monday services at Brushchapel led by Rev Arthur Nash. Born July 15 1953 near Swisher he was a Prairie high school senior and an outstanding wrestler. Surviving are Vernon and Mrs Zach and two brothers Larry and Allen of Swisher and grandparents William Dvorak Joseph Zach and great grandmother Emma Petrak Cedar Rapids.
Donald Dale Goodwin pled innocent to a charge of threatening the life of President Nixon. An inmate at the Iowa state penitentiary in Ft. Madison he allegedly sent three letters last November. He is serving eight years for a bad check conviction in Estherville.
OSKALOOSA Iowa early Friday morning one person is dead and another wounded after a shooting. Authorities say 72 year old Leo Kirk fatally shot 72 year old Myla Richards then turned the gun on himself. Richards had called police to report a man threatening her with a gun. Kirk was hospitalized in Iowa City after being wounded.
A car driven by Linda Schroeder 20 Manning rolled over after missing a corner on highway 6 southeast of Iowa City around 8 p.m. on Thursday. Passengers William Cole 21 Iowa City and Richard Mathes 19 Cedar Rapids suffered injuries. Schroeder and Cole were treated and released at University hospitals. Mathes remained in good condition with head and back injuries. another female passenger was uninjured.

Virleen Sidwell, 60, long-time Lisbon resident, died Friday at Mercy hospital in Cedar Rapids. Born July 19, 1909, she married Omar Sidwell in 1933 in Marion. Survived by father Del Kohl of Lisbon and sister Rowena Miller of Muskogee. Services Monday at 2 p.m. at Morgan funeral home. Memorial fund established. Also note Cubs vs Astros game shown Sunday at 2 PM on KCRG TV 9.
Helen C. Dawe, former instructor at the University of Iowa Child Welfare Research Station in the 1930s and head teacher in the U I Preschool Laboratories, died Friday in Madison Wisconsin. Funeral services will be held Monday in Madison. She earned a PhD in child development at Iowa in 1940 and later taught at Iowa State University and served as a professor at the University of Wisconsin for many years.

The Iowa Regents approved John Leggett as third director of the writers workshop at the University of Iowa, along with several other personnel moves. Walter Foley will head a new student development center, Howard Meredith acts as director of the Institute of Child Behavior and Development, and Robert Barker becomes associate dean of medicine. Leggett will serve 22 years, succeeding George Starbuck as workshop director.
HAMPTON AP Three Hampton residents died in a two car crash on a curve on highway 3 near Hampton. Rev. Lloyd Mitchell 78 died at the scene. His wife Ethelyn 76 died in surgery at Mason City hospital. Kenneth Faint 60 died on arrival at the same hospital. Patrol said the Mitchell car swerved over the center line and struck the Faint car.
In Iowa, nine barges loaded with 12,600 tons of grain towed by the Louisiana slammed into the roller dam under the I 80 bridge near Le Claire. Three barges sank and four rammed the dam. two more sank and one remained afloat with the ninth undecided. Water control operations were not expected to be affected.
Donald K. Messerschmitt, 22, of 91542 Sixteenth avenue SE, is held in the city jail on a rape charge. He allegedly assaulted an 18 year old Cedar Rapids girl early Friday on the southeast side. He awaits arraignment.
