Lowden Man Keeps Antiques in Barn Home Reminiscence
Duane Brockmeyer of Lowden recalls his barn dwelling days with affection after moving to a conventional house last fall. A 21-year-old joined Brammer Manufacturing Co. in Davenport, commuting daily, with a lifelong passion for clocks and antiques. He started collecting at 13, buying clocks with earnings from mowing lawns, and has spent years repairing and building clocks and refinishing furniture.

At age 14 Duane Brockmeyer began collecting clocks and antiques, growing to about 50 items that filled his parents’ living room. He moved to a loft bedroom in a barn owned by his great aunt, lighting with kerosene lamps and using a kerosene stove, an alcohol powered fan, and old Edison and Columbia phonographs. He curates a display of antique lamps, china, glassware, and period furniture while continually seeking new treasures.

New Old Cookstove and Antiques Highlight Brockmeyer Home
Brockmeyer fondly recalls his walnut reed organ and an excellent wood burning cook stove given by friends. The stove provides heat and cooking, fueled partly by slabs from a local saw mill.
