92 Years of Memories by Beverley Duffy
Ben Russell, age 92, reflects on a lifelong downtown business arc starting with selling water lilies and palm fans as a child. He later ran Velvet Ice Cream from 1913 to 1945, built a plant at 210 E Avenue NW, and survived the 1929 flood by rowing ice cream to trucks. He remains active at the Montrose hotel with family ties in Cedar Rapids and long-standing Elks and Masonic memberships.
