Archer Daniels Midland Co. reached a milestone agreement with the Soviet Union that would allow development of large corn processing plants there, according to an ADM official. Elsewhere a developer's plan to rezone 90 acres near Marion for single family housing fizzled, though objectors promised to continue the fight.
A lighthearted joke notes that pigs are hard to trust because they are full of baloney. The quip plays on the word baloney to joke about deceit.
Washington reports allege a Bush ally informed the president of Honduras about a 1985 Reagan plan to give 110 million in aid to Honduras in exchange for support to the Contras. The admission of facts shows Bush active in efforts to bypass congressional restrictions as North testified he was following White House orders.
The Iowa House voted 55-40 to strip the one-year tuition freeze from House File 269 and maintain only a policy to limit future increases to the rate of higher education inflation. Rep Janet Adams said gradual increases better fund costs while supporters argued the freeze would hinder planning. The bill’s fate in the Senate remained uncertain for the year.
President Bush gave qualified support to Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir's proposal for elections among Palestinian Arabs in the West Bank and Gaza. He said Israel must end the occupation and hinted at a workable formula for an interim self governing administration leading to a permanent agreement. Shamir ruled out international supervision of the vote.
Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Sen. David Boren said budget limits prevent modernization of the United States surveillance satellites despite President Reagan's pledge. He warned continued balking could jeopardize near term national security and hinder START treaty progress. Boren noted officials presented the stance as a proposal, not a final decision.
Des Moines owner Glen Goodell, 89, awaits reunion with Blackie a deaf dog left Des Moines after being saved by a Marion woman. The dog, tagged for identification, will travel from Marion to Des Moines to reunite with his aged master who kept vigil since March 26.
