Resources Council reverses, approves Cedar Rapids jail island plan

Linn County supervisors may place the new county jail on May's Island in downtown Cedar Rapids after the Iowa Natural Resources Council unanimously backed conceptual jail plans. A prior Dec. 2 rejection cited flood risks, but a new study by DeWild Grant Beckert and Associates showed a 100 year flood would not submerge the island. The council still seeks detailed jail plans covering evacuation, rail foundation, utilities, and electrical systems.
