Des Moines reports Iowa is short about 3,300 nurses and 2,600 aides with shortages expected to worsen. The study cites rising retirements, fewer graduates, cross-border recruitment, and stressed workplaces pushing more nurses to leave the field.
William Merfeld a longtime Bernard farm owner and auctioneer retired from farming and let younger bidders sell his equipment. He reflected on difficult farm sales and noted high new equipment prices plus strong demand for good used gear. Farmers and neighbors browsed tools and boxes while Merfeld began a new chapter with occasional auctions.
A June 5 sentencing is set for former Huxley Postmaster Jerry Dean Hans who pleaded guilty to misappropriating U S Postal Service funds for his own use. He could face up to five years in prison and a $250 000 fine. Hans allegedly misappropriated $4120 between October 1999 and September 2000 and failed to report stamp sales and bulk mailing payments. Huxley lies in Story County south of Ames.
Linn District Court actions include dismissals for misidentification and double jeopardy, guilty pleas on forgery and theft, and several suspended sentences. Notable cases involve Ching F. Lee, Trenton Fults, Connie Gates, Dustine Dotson, and Travis Williams in Cedar Rapids and Marion related incidents.
