Linn County rejects rezoning for convenience store

Linn County supervisors on Tuesday rejected a proposed rezoning that would allow a local convenience store to operate. Residents feared it would lower property values and sought to block the project. The decision appears on Page 7A. Gas prices in Iowa have surpassed $1 a gallon, but a state official expects no rise to $1.30 soon. Page 10A.

Daley wins Chicago mayor's race succeeding his father

Richard M. Daley won the Chicago mayoral election with about 65 percent of the vote as Tim Evans trailed. Edward Vrdolyak received around 4 percent. Central City council chaos after special vote tally

Central City nears a full council if Richard Parmenter Dr David Robinson and Glen Wickman can be sworn in Monday. Robinson who led with 147 votes may have to choose between the council and the school board where he was appointed Feb 23 to fill a vacancy. The University of Iowa reports Ronnie Harmon repaid over 8,000 in scholarship funds after secretly signing with sports agents in 1985.
