National guard troops moved into Cherokee on Saturday to aid flood fighting as the Little Sioux River rose along its banks. About 40 families evacuated Friday night as the swollen river threatened local businesses. In northwest Iowa, the Floyd and Big Sioux rivers posed further flood threats while Gov. Kay surveyed the area by air. Highway 59 near Cherokee and Highway 1 near Corley were reported affected.

First Artificial Heart Recipient in Houston Operation
HOUSTON iAP reports 47 year old Haskell Karp of Skokie Ill became the first human to receive a completely artificial heart. Surgeons led by Pr Denton Cooley at St Luke's Episcopal Hospital performed a three hour operation and by morning Karp was awake and asking for a donor heart as his wife appealed for help. The device, built by Liotta and Cooley, uses dacron fabric and plastic with four valves and chambers and is meant as a temporary bridge until a human donor becomes available.
