Methane Offers Car Fuel Hope
At the 107th spring meeting of the American chemical society Dr Gustav Egloff and Mary Alexander reported methane from natural gas, petroleum refining, and coal processing could power all cars if necessary. They cited ample methane sources, potential to produce over 1.1 billion barrels, and more than 165000 vehicles already using gas in Europe and North America. They noted drawbacks like equipment weight and fueling hazards but said obstacles could be overcome if methane fuels gain popularity.
