State aid to local schools tops budget plan

The state will provide 648 million dollars in aid to local schools next year, about 40 percent of the budget. Daggett praised the measure as keeping the state's education pledge. Over 180 districts would gain 1.9 million in total, with 1.2 million from state funds and 700 thousand from property taxes, while other districts receive 1.4 million in state aid to offset tax money. Some lawmakers say the increases are too small and tax relief is minor.

Daggett argued the cost would exceed $6 million and lawmakers rejected a larger cushion for districts facing enrollment declines on a procedural vote 44-53.
