Uniform Expense Pay Bill Passes Senate

DES MOINES AP A bill to end state employee expense accounts for $10 breakfasts and $20 dinners passed the senate 32-21, just one vote over the constitutional majority. The measure, now headed to the house, would let the state comptroller with the executive council set uniform per diem standards for travel away from home.

Strawberry Point Council awards contract for Klingbeil house raze

The Strawberry Point town council awarded Harold Happel a 300 dollar contract to raze the Klingbeil house for a future museum housing a large doll collection owned by two local sisters. Bids for the 40 by 60 foot museum building will be opened this spring. The council heard a proposal from Roger McIntosh of Central Telephone Co. to buy part of the city parking lot behind city hall for a new phone building, but no action was taken. Ambulance service discussed but not acted on as Feeney Knutson's ends May 1.

Milwaukee Tracks Open at Washington

Washington reports the main Milwaukee line resumed service at 4 30 a m after a derailment halted traffic Wednesday. Five cars derailed eastbound, three on their sides removed Thursday. Mechanical failure blamed. one car dropped wheels and rode the track before detaching. Most of the 83 car train was cleared. remaining cars carried wood pulp, potash, flake board and lettuce.

Tokyo reports the Soviet Union warned Japan that its air force will conduct bombing exercises in the northern Pacific for 14 days starting April 10. The Japanese maritime safety agency received the notice.

Iowa Senate approves year-round studded tires for buses and fire trucks

The Iowa senate passed a bill by a 50 to 7 vote allowing year-round use of metal studded tires on school buses and emergency fire department vehicles. The measure, originally limited to school buses, gained house support for extending to fire department vehicles. Current law restricts studded tires to November 1 through April 1.

Polish Airliner Crash Kills 53 Near Cracow

A Soviet built turboprop airliner crashed in the Tatra foothills near Cracow killing all 53 aboard including two Americans. Richard Andrews 45 of Forest Hills New York worked in KLM passenger handling at JFK and was visiting Poland. Jean Irwin 25 a student at Warsaw Grand Theater had spent 18 months in Poland.
