Longtime Cedar Rapids caterer dies after years of service
Bill Doerflein, born 1889 in Shueyville and a Cedar Rapids resident since 1892, built a catering and meat business noted for roasting fowl and holiday dinners. He served the Cedar Rapids Chamber of Commerce, Shrine, Knights of Columbus, and Jaycee meals, becoming an honorary Jaycee member. He also once operated a restaurant, partnered with his son Joe since 1946, and raced harness horses for about a decade. Police pursued a larceny case involving a suspect linked to a mug photo, but the man evaded capture.
