Two Cedar Rapids high schools may hire new basketball coaches

Unofficial word suggests Cedar Rapids area schools could split the basketball duties with two head coaches. Orville Rust plans to leave Washington to become athletic director, pending board approval. Names linked to Jefferson job include Earl Klinzman’s successor, Herb Thompson, Don Shupe, Gay Dahn, Roy Johnson, Jack Darland, and Murray Wier.

136 Schools Entered In B C State Track Meet

IOWA CITY 136 schools with 1,500 athletes will compete Saturday in class B and C indoor state track. Emmetsburg defends class B, Beaman-Conrad class C titles. Tabor was B runner-up, West Chester C runner-up. Entries include records for sprints, distance, relays, jumps, and throws across multiple schools and facilities.

Erickson Named Wisconsin Basketball Coach

John E. Erickson, appointed Wisconsin Badgers head basketball coach, succeeds Bud Foster after 25 years. The 31 year old, former Beloit College star and Lake Forest head coach, favors a fast break and running style to lift a team that finished 3-18 in the Big Ten. Erickson remains in the athletic department faculty.

Buhr Named Albert Lea Basketball Coach

Albert Lea announces Don Buhr longtime Upper Iowa graduate and Manning coach is hired as the new basketball coach succeeding Paul Wilke with a $6500 salary. Buhr led Manning to state tournaments the last two seasons and his teams have losses only to Des Moines Roosevelt and Sioux Center in that span. The 1951 USA graduate has prior coaching stints at Ledyard and Radcliffe.

They also sent or to be shipped several players including Julio Gora y, five pitchers and reassignments to Daytona Beach. The move follows returning shortstop prospect Julio Goray and six players from spring camp.

Wesleyan Faces Wayland in AAU Women Semis

Iowa Wesleyan, seeded second, defeated the Tomboys 52-44 in the quarterfinals to advance to the AAU Women's tournament semifinals in St Joseph Missouri. Rita Horky led Wesleyan with 20 points as Wayland beat Amarillo 58-35. Nashville and Omaha won their quarterfinals.
