White weighs appeal over Shaw shooting special prosecutor

Johnson County Attorney J Patrick White will decide by week’s end whether to appeal Judge William Eads 1924 precedent based order appointing Joseph Johnston as special prosecutor to present the Eric Shaw case to a grand jury White blasted the move as a dangerous legal twist and warned he may step aside if conflict concerns persist Johnston says no fair process would occur under White presenting the case and Eric Shaw’s family hopes for White’s withdrawal

Iowa schools warned about tainted berries

Iowa school districts in Linn and Johnson counties and 56 other counties were alerted to possible tainted frozen strawberries linked to hepatitis A cases in Michigan. No Iowa illnesses reported. schools may have received but not served the fruit. Officials urged hand washing and advised schools to avoid serving or discard any berries from the distribution.

Sheriff seeks backing to add 100 jail beds on May's Island

Linn County officials push a 100 bed jail expansion next to the existing Linn County Jail on May's Island. The plan adds 32,000 square feet at an estimated 4.5 to 5 million dollars with 1.8 million from a federal grant. Funding relies on bonds and county dollars. revenue from housing federal and other prisoners helps offset costs.
