UPI reports Senator Russell Long says the $50 per person tax rebate depends on personal lobbying by President Carter. Lightning Strikes Home and Substation in Iowa Storm

A Friday night lightning storm interrupted power for Collins Radio Nash Finch and Lehigh Portland Cement for 48 minutes on the northeast side. At 7 44 p m a strike hit a Robins road substation in Hiawatha and another strike hit Florence Driscoll’s home on Center Point road NE at 8 25 p m, shaking the neighborhood and damaging gutters windows roof siding and plaster with Cedar Rapids firefighters called to the scene.

GM Chairman denounces gas-guzzler tax risk to car market

Thomas Murphy of General Motors warned at the Sales Executive club that a gas-guzzler tax could backfire by curbing the shift to smaller, fuel efficient cars. Sarasota AP reports American Cancer Society president Dr. R Lee Clark says no human cancer evidence exists for saccharin yet the society will study potential links and urge independent research. He backs special congressional review to possibly exempt saccharin from the Delaney Clause given medical uses for diabetics and obesity. FDA is moving toward a ban after Canadian studies tied high doses to bladder cancer in rats.

Miracle berry could alter taste buds to mimic sugar

A West African berry, miraculin, may replace sugar and saccharin by making sour foods taste sweet. FDA classifies miraculin as a drug, possibly delaying approval after testing.
