In Des Moines the Iowa senate approved three education funding measures totaling 14.217 million dollars while House budget leader Rep. Wally Horn threatened to delay one bill to push for a new University of Iowa fieldhouse. He urged private donations and cited Iowa’s strong teams as a rationale for the project. Richey cautioned against tying education funding to athletics noting private funds already support Phase II of the Lindquist Center.
Strips from a letterpress to offset press caused width reduction and extra Sunday sections. Wider newsprint left over will run out in about two weeks as production shifts unit by unit. Normalcy expected later this year once the press conversion completes.
