Fire destroys downtown Oelwein including Grand Theater
Fire felled half a block of downtown Oelwein on Monday evening causing about $500000 in damage. Eleven communities aided Oelwein firefighters who fought the blaze until midnight, with one Hazleton firefighter injured. The Grand Theater, four second story apartments, and the Ace hardware store were gutted. Officials suspect the origin near the hardware store, with possibilities including an apartment appliance left on or a fire spread from the alley. Firefighters saved the House of Cards barbershop and Interstate Power building thanks to a firewall and many volunteers. Visibility was poor and residents were asked to conserve water.
