King George II died in Athens at age 56 from angina pectoris. With no heir except his brother Prince Paul, the cabinet moved to swear in Paul, as Greece faces a monarchist symbol and possible crisis amid wartime geopolitics and U.S. aid debates.
Cedar Rapids unions for bricklayers painters iron workers construction laborers and cement finishers idle Tuesday as contracts expired at midnight. Negotiations began in January with no disclosed demands though painters seek 25 cents more per hour and unions say workers will not work until new contracts are signed.
President Truman urged Congress to extend rent controls for a year beyond June 30 arguing a continued housing shortage and imbalanced rental demand. The Banking Committee debated a 10 percent rent ceiling increase and repeal of building material controls as part of the debate.
A warm April pattern was forecast for eastern Iowa with rising temperatures into the mid 50s and cloudy skies. Showers were expected Thursday and Saturday while overall warmth would continue.
