Southward We Drift Beneath a Painted Ocean
A narrator describes days of voyage aboard the Sea Queen heading toward the southern seas after passing Juan Fernandez. Tuttle dominates seamanship, while Lady Darlington, Celeste, and the crew maintain tense, restrained dynamics as they drift in a vast, featureless sea. The narrator observes De Novo with Celeste, notes Olsen’s dull honesty, and notes the Chilean cook’s busy duties as the voyage stretches on.
