Washington reports American forces have taken Vera Cruz after heavy fighting that left several Americans dead or wounded. Rear Admiral Fletcher described ground combat with Mexican defenders atop houses and in the port area while Prairie naval shelling aided the landing.
A Fletcher dispatch dated April 21 reports ongoing desultory fire in Vera Cruz. The admiral notes control of the railroad yard area including the customs house and consulate, and confirms all railroad rolling stock remains safe.
Keystone Refining Co. plans a 2000 barrel per day refinery east of Casper with a new pipeline from Salt Creek. A 40 acre site has been bought, government permits secured, and a Milwaukee directors meeting will discuss construction. The independent company, led by F von Tacky and EK A. Wadhams, acquired Hjorth holdings last year.
In Washington the senate approved by 72 to 15 a resolution backing the president in using armed forces to secure demand for apologies from Mexico. Secretary of War Daniels rushed to the White House to consult with President Wilson as Rear Admiral Fletcher landed Marines at Vera Cruz after a battle that killed and wounded four.
Maas refused to aid restoring order while American refugees were not harmed. Many civilians boarded steamers, some remained ashore as Bryan met the German ambassador about arming Huerta aboard a German vessel due to land at Vera Cruz tonight. The government aimed to block ammunition shipments. Congress debated the president's use of military force as the Senate recessed and the House adjourned.
A Vera Cruz dispatch released by the navy department at 3 a m on Wednesday reports General Maas departed for Vera Cruz in his carriage with his family following in another carriage and says he has not been heard from since Mexican troops were allowed free rein and few officers remain on duty
The rebel agency in Washington reports that claims Carranza and some subordinates have taken a hostile stance toward President Wilson are unfounded. Official reports indicate the opposite.
Percy Palmer visits Casper from Laramie to handle business and greet friends. L. J. Nunn of Wyoming Electric Co. spent Sunday in Casper on business and returned to New York Wednesday. A W Tiforth from Medicine Hat toured Salt Creek last week then returned to Casper Sunday. The second story of the McClure building is being converted to a rooming house leased to a newly arrived East woman. Wint/Hanty, J W Wied, A Luty, and Ira G Weatherly returned Monday from Basin country after oil prospects. Julian Lever and daughter Ina left for Omaha to visit friends and shop. Maze Conwell returned Saturday from Denver after visiting Olive at Walcott school. W E B Stanley received his humidor for cut flowers to be displayed in the Midwest hotel lobby. C Raymond Woolward, haberdasher proprietor at the Midwest hotel, left Friday for Chadron Neb. for several days on business.
Wyoming farmer Harvey Raby was found not guilty after a weeklong district court trial over an October shooting dispute with neighbor Joseph Holmes. The jury, led by foreman L. L. Gantz, deliberated from Saturday afternoon until verdict.
The counsel Bryant Cromer defended Raby in a self defense verdict. Cromer elicited key points from the chain of circumstances and delivered a masterful closing to the jury. He received praise from many bar members for the capable handling and the acquittal amid damaging circumstances.
W W Gildroy president and James Morgan secretary of the State Federation of Labor with H B Schneider editor of the Wyoming Labor Journal arrived Wednesday to install seven newly organized locals. Barbers plasterers lathers painters cooks waiters bartenders and stonemasons will be installed. Boilermakers and carpenters have long been organized.
Casper Lodge No 221 O O F and Natrona Rebekah Lodge invite delegates to a banquet at the Midwest hotel tomorrow night with tickets at one dollar per plate. Unreserved attendees may buy at the hotel and join a ball at the hall afterward.
The Natrona county high school junior class plans a Coliseum May 1 program with tickets available from students or at the door. Attendees include local figures such as Attorney Whelan and Attorney Dillon visiting from Lander and Casper respectively.
Henry Rathvon, field superintendent at Midwest Salt Creek camp, was seriously stabbed by J A Easter after an altercation prompted Rathvon to demand Easter leave the camp. Rathvon was treated, transported to Casper, and remains hospitalized with hope for recovery. Easter is jailed awaiting a preliminary hearing.
John J. Steffen owner of a Douglas drug store and town pioneer died after a brief illness. He retired Monday night and was found unconscious Tuesday morning. he passed away Wednesday near noon. He was a prominent Mason with funeral rites to be conducted by the order. Third Regiment band and local business houses were to observe the day.
