Local items report the Carthage cornet band concert and many community notices. Visitors come and go, with Clare Sattler, Miss Ethel Harris, and Miss Stella Gause among those mentioned, plus ties to Kirkwood's furniture and Brices bread.
On Decoration Day evening a surprise party was held at T. J. Addison’s home for Mrs Addison’s fiftieth birthday. The event featured a gift of a gold ring from her children, refreshments, and well wishers. Distants guests included Mr Wm Wallace and Miss Hazel and Eva Haskett of Tipton. Inclement weather affected cemetery ceremonies but the local G A R program drew a packed Columbia Hall audience. Rev Alpheus Trueblood gave the first Friends minister day address in Carthage amid high praise for the Carthage cornet band.
Tomorrow evening the band gives its first performance for an audience. All should attend to support a successful event. The concert starts at 6 p.m. on the Hill Hotel lawn with ice cream strawberries cake and other treats served.
Miss Ruby Gray departs in two weeks for Danville to pursue the Normal course. Frank E. Edwards of Knights Town is appointed the new manager of the Queen City Orchestra in Cincinnati.
New Castle has begun constructing a local fire department and now possesses a new hose wagon awaiting a blaze.
Local society notes recount Miss Lucile Billingsly of Cleveland visiting Miss Stella Gause while a concert program highlights a cornet solo by Prof Eldridge. Multiple visits and travels are noted across Greenfield Rushville Indianapolis and nearby towns with social calls, lectures, and community events.
The superintendent and church members thank those who managed and the children who labored in the Children’s Day exercises. D W Kirkwood, Superintendent. The Christian church last Sunday evening showed full participation with ready hands and timely, well done work. Birthday gathering at Walter B Hill’s home honored neighbors with carnations roses and ferns and light fare. Met me at Carthage July 4th.

Mrs M F Lovett and Mrs J A Sipe spent last Wednesday in Rushville. Clarkson Parker Sylvanus Falbert and wife, and Mrs Mary Hubbard with Miss Celia Judy attended the county S. 5. convention at Rushville. Miss Florence Henley will return from Bloomingdale next Saturday to spend a week in Richmond for Earlham College commencement. Born to Alton Henley and wife a son on June 3. Chas R Butler's machine shops offer best harvesting oils for least money. Miss Lilian Henley graduates from Earlham College this year. The commencement is set for Wednesday June 12 in the college auditorium. Thimble Club entertained by Mrs Walter Hill. cards reserved for announcements, with social features and lunches reflecting hostess hospitality.
The Children's Day exercises at the Christian church last Sunday evening were excellent. The house was crowded with many standing. The children performed well and even the infant class engaged with heart and soul. Special mention goes to Kenneth Smithman, a very young soloist who sang sweetly from a chair before a large audience.
