Attacked by an Eagle near Honey Creek
Mrs Christina Mortensen of Pottawatomie county was severely injured in a dramatic attack by an immense eagle while garden work. The bird swooped, dragged at her shoulders, tore her face and head, and fought her until she collapsed unconscious. She is listed in critical condition with extensive injuries. Fire on City of Rome Aboard from Glasgow to New York
The City of Rome arrived in New York after a fire in No 4 hold off 41 28 N 63 29 W. Captain Hugh Young reports the ship sailed June 19 with 56 saloon 90 second cabin and 150 steerage passengers and general merchandise. Fire alarms sounded at 2 30 p m and by 5 p m the blaze was under control. Cargo, mainly jute goods, may be a total loss. No panic among passengers.

Gas and growth ripple through Gwynneville area
John Vancyoc is reported much better. Chas Spurrier and wife of Indianapolis visited Joseph Peer and wife last Sunday. Samuel Arnold and A. P. Workman won a contract for a fine brick school at Bennett's. A gas well near Gwynneville will be drilled immediately to meet rising fuel demand. Rev. John Reese is critically ill after a stroke. Rev. Sylvanus Talbert preached in his absence. Miss Bessie Frazier organized a junior Christian Endeavor society. William Leisure, Board of Trade president, plans for a heavy wheat crop. Squire Swain faces tough opposition but continues to operate. A monster gas well was drilled, strongest in Shelby county, with new piping planned. Morristown could buy gas at low rates if desired.
