The Indiana Senate engrossed a bill reforming county government creating a five member county council to handle legislative and judicial duties, reducing the county commissioners executive role. The House adopted the majority on education reform replacing Brown with Goodwine after seven hours of debate. A disfranchisement bill for vote selling or buyer influence failed in the House. A Powers bill to curb appeals from justices' courts under fifty dollars failed. Fire escape requirements for buildings over two stories passed the House.

State Colleges Pass Senate in Goodwine Compromise Vote

Indianapolis February 10 The Goodwine compromise bill affecting the state colleges and the reorganization of the state board of education passed the senate 37 to 4. Other measures: constitutional convention, county records inspection, and library bills failed or passed as noted. The house also passed pensions, tax and purity bills, and a statue appropriation while a telegraph rate cut was introduced.

Proposed Drainage of Swamp Lands Up In the House

The Kanakakee valley drainage bill covering about 720000 acres of swamp lands moved to special order for Monday after minor amendments by Mr Knotts. Eichhorn sought time to amend key parts, and his printing amendment to Caraway's bill ended the Documentary Journal. Senate action included an anti lynching bill and a tax offset proposal defeated. A near cemetery area liquor restriction and dealer licensing issues passed or died. adjournment set for Monday.

Township Reform Bill Clears Senate in 33 to 18 Vote

Indianapolis feb 14 the township reform bill passed the senate by 33 ayes to 18 nays as part of county and township commission reform. other measures included lake harbor funding for mondam and new labor commissioner powers while railroad rights of way faced opposition. house actions moved tax board reorganization and county records inspection while insurers abuses and life policy death by own action gained favorable reports.

County Reform Bill Sparks Senate Opposition in Indiana

Indianapolis Feb 15 The county reform bill faced third reading but no final vote as motions to recommit or delay showed growing opposition. An amended primary election provision leaves the timing to county committees, effectively killing uniform same day primaries. The Senate also passed a $100100 monument appropriation with a Dec 31 1900 finish deadline amid debate.

McEnery Resolution on Philippines Policy Adopted by Senate

The US Senate approved the McEnery resolution declaring a Philippine policy after a 26 to 22 vote. Vice President Hobart cast the tie-breaking vote against the Bacon amendment. some Democrats abstained.
