Miss Wood and Miss White of Earlham gave an elocutionary entertainment at the church with a small fee collected to aid their studies.

They plan to lower the building to add an 18 foot rear extension and other improvements, aiming to create a large, commodious store. The firm is expanding stock across dry goods, boots, shoes, and gents furnishings, with Gear described as honest and energetic and ready to serve customers.

Johnson Victorious In Henry County Congressional Race

Henry A. Johnson leads Henry county by about 100 votes and will secure the county's 36 votes at the New Castle convention on the 16th to win the Sixth district nomination. Watson carried surprises in some townships while losing others as Johnson’s supporters express mixed reactions. Watson sent congratulations to Johnson and thanks to supporters in a Journal letter.

Fined for Betting by Squire Alsman in Arlington

Rushville report says George W Offutt and Joseph Moore, prosperous Posey township farmers, were each fined 17 dollars for betting. Moore offered 20 to 1 against his tenant Andy Moore plowing a furrow this spring, wagering 100 dollars to Offutt’s 5. Both men left checks in a local bank. The tenant Moore plans to plow when fields are ready. Offutt appeals.

Cavern Struck in West Liberty Gas Well Drill

In a West Liberty area gas well, drilling at 800 feet faced hard rock for a time as a 2000 pound bit pressed, then suddenly yielded and dropped into a cavern. The event produced a flat impact sound and locals compare the strike to hitting the Chinese wall's foundation.

Explorer Captain Pierce and Canal Suits Across Counties

Capt. Elias H. Pierce, 76, Camden resident, recalls Mexican War exploits and Idaho gold finds as farmers along the Wabash and Erie canal face damages suits. Fred Olcott of New York and E. W. Shirk of Chicago claim 70 miles of canal, suing 17 local farmers. more suits expected. School-age children rise from 311 in 1883 to 2,650 this year.
