Farmers in Rush County observe a five acre hybrid corn test plot near Carthage run by Chas Hurst of Manilla. Visitors tour the fields daily to compare varieties and plan 1940 planting choices. Plans include a public husking bee to display final yields and kernels.
The 1939 Indiana Corn Festival begins in Fowler next Monday night October 2 with about twenty girls from Indiana cities competing for the title. Hal Totten will MC with a panel of judges including June Travis and Clarence Shapiro. The 2 hour program features Purdue orchestra and Darlene Mahns, with 2000 seats available. The winner will travel to Indianapolis for wardrobes and appearances including Gov Townsend. The festival runs Oct 12 13 and 14 with parades, bands, and a coronation ball.
Rush County schools release attendance figures showing Carthage High leading with 336 total students and 38 first year students. Milroy follows with 331, while New Salem High reports 110 in the upper four years after the closing of Ging and Glenwood high schools.
The Choral club’s annual home talent show in a minstrel form drew strong applause with endmen Harold Ruby Raymond Manche and others. Performances included violin and bass solos, a blues number, cake walks, acrobatic dancing, choral pieces, and a poetry reading. Proceeds support the school band movement and new band books for the children.
The Indiana Yearly Meeting of Friends closed a successful session in Richmond. Dr. William C. Dennis of Earlham College urged avoiding WWI mistakes and noted Wilson’s crisis, while the meeting appealed against repealing the arms embargo in the neutrality act via telegrams to Roosevelt, Indiana’s senators, and Raymond S. Springer.
Local public service representative Ben Neal and two colleagues spent Tuesday tracing radio interference plaguing residents. The team used a new “trouble finder” after prior attempts failed due to inadequate equipment. Residents express appreciation for Neal’s persistent efforts.
Betty Beckner wife Ora Beckner of near Arlington is improving at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis after suffering a brain hemorrhage last week.
Miss Ramona Winfield, a Carthage High School alumna, is chosen to represent Butler University students on the new Student Affairs Committee. Prof. John S. Lloyd, committee chairman, announced the selection and her role in social and academic affairs.
A six week dry spell without rain raises fire risks in Carthage as leaves dry and residents burn trash. Fire Prevention Week runs October 8 to 14 with an ordinance limiting outdoor burns to 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Citizens urged to watch fires and aid in reducing losses.
A large Carthage group lights up Indiana college rosters for 1939 40 with Ramona Winfield and Clarence Parker among notable graduates. The list spans Indiana University Purdue Earlham Hanover Central Business Marion and Methodist Nurses Training with multiple freshmen and seniors named.
A daughter named Donna Kay Addison was born Friday morning to Mr. and Mrs. Donald Addison at their home north of Homer. The baby weighed seven pounds.

A Sunday blaze destroyed the DeSchipper Packing barn on East Fifth Street with hay feeding the flames. Winds spread sparks to nearby residences while witnesses alleged arson. The DeSchipper building and a neighboring barn suffered damage, with electric shocks and injuries from the chaos but no serious harm reported. Insurance coverage was noted.
A Carlton Chaney farm structure a mile and a half west of Glenwood burned last Friday morning. The frame double garage housed two tons of honey an automobile bee keeping equipment and antiques. another ton of honey stored in the house escaped. Sparks also damaged several hog houses. Rushville volunteers battled the blaze but total loss occurred with no insurance on the building or contents.
The sixty day open season on squirrels ends in the 69 counties of the Southern Zone at midnight on Saturday Oct 7 Hoosier Hunters have found squirrels numerous in many sections of the state.
Dale Miller takes over athletics at Morton Memorial after Harold Bower resigns after two seasons with the Tigers. Miller, a Clinton High School and Ball State graduate, steps in this year while Bower will coach St. Marys athletic teams in Ohio.
Resignations of John McKee assistant county agent and Miss Elsie C Schaefer home demonstration agent create two vacancies in Hancock county. McKee takes full time county agent duties in Davies county on October 1. Schaefer retires to be married soon after three years of active farm work and popularity with 4H club members.
