Fire truck answers call to John Brooks home
A stove exploded at the home of John Brooks on South Main Street but the fire truck found no fire after arriving Sunday afternoon. The siren drew crowds as the blaze was quickly cleared with no damage. It was the fifth alarm to date this summer.

Three suits for damages were filed in Rush circuit court after an August 29 1939 automobile crash in Carthage. Playfellows Fallen: German Shepherd Killed by Gunshot
The Lesley family dog, a large German Shepherd named Playfellow, died Tuesday afternoon from a gun wound at their Carthage home. Mr and Mrs Ruben Lesley returned from Knightstown to find blood on the cement by the house and at the breakfast area. The dog had been a playmate to the Lesley children, often accompanying them to school and helping with chores.
