Rush County farmers expect a bumper corn crop despite late maturity from a wet spring. Some drying time may be needed and seed corn should be dried artificially. soybeans also look strong with heavy foliage and rising acreage as prices stay favorable.
Ghurgh notes announce Sunday worship at 9 30 with a sermon titled The New Alchemy of the Cross in Human Life. The planned fourth in a series on The Makers of a New World The Role of Education is postponed. Women’s Missionary Society met at Mrs Willella Henley’s home on Wednesday.
The one hundred fifteenth Indiana Friends Yearly Meeting begins Tuesday in Richmond Idaho and runs through Sunday with sessions led by local pastor James R Furbay and speakers including Frank Guatt Frank Chant C A McGonagle Homer Biddl ecum Marianna Brown Ward Applegate Ira Johnson Russell Burkett Merle Davis Marie Cassell Edmund T Albertson and Earlham President William C Dennis. Carthage attendees will report back next Sunday.
The state police plan a temporary barracks at a Rushville area farm residence on State Road 3 about a half mile south of town. Captain Matt Leach selected the site, with sergeant and nine officers plus two detectives to operate from Rushville. Most personnel will move families to Rushville while a permanent building is sought next spring.
East St. Christian Church lays out fall events with an Oct. 11 church fair Oct. 13 Rally and Promotion Day and Oct. 27 Homecoming. A new orchestra formed by Herrington will provide preludes to Bible School hour. Worship at 10:30 carries the theme Victory through Cooperation. The pastor will lecture Sunday night on The Christian Virtues followed by a discussion. Evening services start at 7:00.
Harmnegan and Carthage Christian churches pastor Geo. H. Holwager enrolled in Butler University College of Religion. He will attend school two days weekly as a candidate for the Bachelor of Sacred Literature degree.
The official board of Fletcher M. E. Church met last Monday night at Mrs Katherine Kennedey to close the year. Rev N S Shcoolfield leaves Tuesday for conference at Bedford. No preaching services Sunday. Sunday school at 9 30.
The Young People's Society of the Christian church held a skating party in the church basement last Friday night. Devotional services and a study period followed with the lesson on Inter-racial Antipathies. Attendees included Juanita Winfield, Carrolyn Norris, Juanita King, Dorril Tetrick, Jean Stewart, Jean Porter, Howard Stoten, Rosalie Humes, Richard Sipe, Merrill Stoten, Anna Jean Kyser, Herbert McCorkhill Jr., Jean Addison, Jimmie Henley, and Marvin Norris.
Rush County Christian church convention at Fairview Christian church has been deferred to Wednesday October 23. The same program will be presented by the same team previously slated for Thursday September 19. The change follows other meetings planned before Fairview knew the county convention fate.
The Ripley Farmers' Telephone Co begins tearing down overhead wires along the railroad and laying underground cable to improve service in the Rose Hill addition.
The Rush county tax adjustment board met in the court house to determine 1936 budgets and tax rates for all taxing units. Members include Mayor Charles A. Frazee and others. The board cannot raise taxes but can lower them. decisions are final unless appealed to the state tax board. Edgar Stiers serves as secretary.
A meeting at the library discussed the new wheat program. Chairman and county director Roy Herkless led with Dr. Wm. Coleman and Harry Bentley elected for four years. County agent Brown and about 25 members attended as the contract was made more flexible and awaits arrival for signing.
The Sunshine Circle gathered at Mrs. Guy Ewing’s home for Devotional services led by Mrs. Lowell Reeves and a brief business session. Members shared favorite recipes and kitchen hints while planning church fair preparations for next Thursday.
Albertson W. Watkins 80 died Monday night at his Beach home from gangrene due to infection. Funeral services were held Thursday at 1 30 p m at the Christian church North Market Street with burial at Riverside cemetery Carthage. He leaves two sisters Ethelinda and Bertha Watkins and a brother Tom Watkins of Anderson.
Purdue warns Rush County farmers to sow wheat after the fly free date to curb Hessian fly infestation. J. J. Davis notes Indiana fields show 5 to 64 percent infection with Rush County at 17 percent, urging careful timing and good seedbed practices supported by a statewide map.
A truck trailer loaded with eight tons of whiskey broke loose on a Morris town hill causing damage at Gates garage. Driver Joseph Lyons of Indianapolis was fined $1 and costs for operating without proper brakes. The trailer struck a car, damaged a gas pump, ignited gasoline, and overturned. Lyons was slightly injured. The incident occurred about 10:00 PM and the truck was owned by Ziffrin Trucking.
Mr and Mrs Fred Parish and daughter Norma Lee were in Martinsville Sunday. On their return trip they visited Mr and Mrs Aldridge Harvey of Monrovia.
Mr. Fred McCormick of California arrives in Knightsown after 45 years away. A former pupil of the Oscar Alexander farm era, he recalls the old smoke house and lamps from his boyhood buggy. He plans to take the lamps to his California ranch as a keepsake. He is an Eastern war correspondent en route to New York then California, with travels to China, Japan, and Russia. He spoke to local children at the I. S. and S. C. Home.
The Rushville Republican reports two public hearings in Aberdeen and Washington informed the final rye program recommendations for 1936 to 1939. The plan, to be administered with county wheat associations, set rye acreage at 75 percent of base and advance payments of 20 cents per bushel for allotments, with total 1936 payments projected at 35 cents. Also, Indiana towns pass a new elective-officer law requiring trustees and clerk-treasurer roles, term changes, and a merged treasurer with clerk, effective January 1, 1936.
The office of Thomas Fogarty, county superintendent, announced Morristown elementary and high school enrollment figures. Morristown has 330 pupils total with 160 in elementary and 170 in high school. Grade counts range from 19 in first grade to 51 in ninth, with daily late enrollment changes delaying full accuracy.
The twenty third annual homecoming at McCordsville M E Church will be on Sunday September 29. Activities start with Sunday school at 9 30 AM followed by a 10 30 AM worship service and a basket dinner at noon. An afternoon program begins at 2 15 PM with music readings speeches and reminiscences. Memorial service led by Rev Estal Taylor of the Fortville Christian church is included. S B Prater is president and Mary M Wilson secretary treasurer invite all to attend.
Mr Richard Sipe hosted a Tuesday night bridge table with Miss Juanita Winfield receiving the prize. Guests included Miss Rosalie Humes and Mr Jimmie Henley along with the host and refreshments were served.
The Friend's Missionary Society schedules its annual rummage sale for Thursday through Saturday September 26 to 28 at Newsom's Brick Corner. Proceeds support society work and a food sale will be held on Saturday.
The Republicans of Carthage will meet Monday September 23 at 7:30 p.m. at Roy Newby’s office to nominate candidates for the town Board of Carthage.
Carthage suffers an 8-3 defeat to Milroy in a game marked by eight errors and key missed hits. Norris allowed seven hits as Wells and Michael doubled, while Carthage failed to cash in with runners on base.
