Mrs. W. A. Spence of Carthage R. R. and her grandson Dewey Spence of Beech Grove Indianapolis returned home Sunday after a week in Atlanta Georgia. They visited Mrs. Spence's brother Paul Daugherty and his family and daughter.
Mrs Beatrice Bannister underwent major surgery Monday at Bartholomew County Hospital Columbus. She is daughter of Mr and Mrs Henry Whitfield and mother of Mrs John Wood of Carthage. Her room is 243.
Mrs Ralph Truitt returned to her Carthage R R home Saturday from the Good Samaritan Hospital Cincinnati following major surgery. Mrs George Moore returned home Tuesday from the Rush Memorial Hospital.
The Citizen launches its 17th annual school column titled Four Ways From The Office. The feature, dating back to 1946, presents student activities with no editors or writers by the paper, under the supervision of Mrs. Nancy Ruby, English and Spanish teacher and National Honor Society sponsor.
The Carthage Lions Club held its first regular gathering at the Lions Den with 22 attendees including District Governor Donald Reid of Scottsburg and other Indiana Lions officials. Awards honored 100 percent attendance and long service. the program featured Europe travel slides from Nice, France. Next meeting isMonday September 24.
The Triple F church group met at Carthage Friends Church Monday at 6 30 p m with eight members and two guests. Steve McClurg called the meeting to order and Rev Kenneth Shirk was introduced. Mary Alice Edwards led the lesson and served refreshments. Linda Wells was the news reporter.
The Carthage group calls a meeting for Monday September 17 at 7 30 p m at the Community Center.
Miss Sue Mosier daughter of Charles Mosier of Carthage left Sunday for Purdue University to begin as a freshman. she was joined by her father and aunt Mrs Jack Fagel. Miss Judy Kennedy departed Tuesday to resume studies at Purdue as a sophomore, accompanied by Mr and Mrs Raymond Kennedy to Lafayette.
Miss Pam Hunt has entered Jordan College of Music at Butler University as a dance major. She was accompanied to Indianapolis by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Hunt.
Keneth Shirk and his wife moved to Carthage in a trailer near the Friends Church. Shirk began duties as church pastor on September 1.
Mr and Mrs George Roland of Carthage announce the birth of a daughter Debra Deann born Sunday at Rush Memorial Hospital weighing 7 pounds 12 ounces. Grandparents are Luther Hull Russell Roland and Mr and Mrs George Roland.
Mr and Mrs Sam Magers of R. R. J. Carthage welcomed a baby boy born at Hancock Memorial Hospital in Greenfield on Wednesday of last week.
Marine Private Vergil J. Hendershott, son of Mr and Mrs Virgil E Hendershott of Route 1 Arlington Ind, completed recruit training August 23 at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego Calif The indoctrination covers basic military law discipline and physical conditioning with three weeks on the rifle range firing the M14 and learning infantry weapons.
The Rush County Tax Adjustment Board met in the county auditor's office to review budget requirements from local taxing units. They reduced three levies by varying amounts, with the largest cut of 25 cents to the Carthage Town civil rate and smaller cuts to the tuition, corporation, street, library, and Weedy Memorial funds. Final rates to be adjusted by the State Tax Board in October. no rate may be increased.

Carthage High School starts the 1962 63 year with Principal Byron E. Smith and Mrs. Smith leading a large staff. Seventh to twelfth grade elections mark new officers and honors, while festival queen candidates are named. Grade news covers class enrollments and activities across grades one through six, a magazine sales drive, and the lunch program detail.
The Carthage American Legion Auxiliary met at 8 p.m. with Mrs. George McNabb hosting. Amelia Roell of Shelbyville installed new officers including Delmer Sipes as president and Eva Passmore present as secretary, with gifts given to Roell and Passmore and a Certificate of Merit awarded for an 82 rating.
Carthage dropped the opener 3-1 to Arlington as Ed Beckner limited the visitors to two hits and added a double. Kit Porter allowed three hits and fanned five while Patterson and Zimmerman led Carthage at the plate. In the game, Arlington jumped to a 2-0 lead, then added a run in the seventh to seal the win.
Carthage plates five runs in the second to beat Manilla 10 5 and move to 1-1. Each side collects seven hits with Ron Weidner delivering a bases loaded single. Porter fans five, walks seven, while teammates commit just one error as Milroy High School visits Friday at 3:30 p.m. to face the Raiders.
Regular meeting of Legion Post No. 316 discussed plans for the Fall Festival and approved a 250 donation to the Community Fall Festival Furnace Fund. Robert Eoff was elected Commander to fill the vacancy caused by Gary Stewart’s resignation.
Mrs Mary Joseph and her son Mike joined Mike Geise and Larry Pitts at the Cincinnati versus St Louis game Sunday for a local attendance report.
A two day bowling tournament for men and women is planned for September 22 23 at Carth Knight Bowling Lanes. The event begins each day at 1 p m. Rules and entry blanks are available at the Bowling Lanes.
The Carthage Home Garden Club leads the Fall Festival with a 1 p.m. start on Thursday September 27 and a 3 p.m. public opening for the Flower Show and Sale. Judging runs 1 to 3 p.m. with 11 design classes and horticulture exhibits, advance design registration due September 26, and entry hours 8:30 to 11:00 a.m. Entries must be grown by exhibitors and labeled by variety where possible.
About seventy parents and teachers attended the Carthage PTO meeting Tuesday night to meet the school staff and plan for the year. Jack Tweedy outlined committees and aims while Principal Byron Smith discussed staff, discipline and costs. He urged a strong staff and meaningful education toward living well, noting the district runs at about 1000 dollars daily. The next PTO event is the October Halloween party.
Rush County records indicate August real estate transfers totaling 334 750 versus 333 000 in July. The August figure is the highest since 1955 for that month. Rushville recorded 49 750 while non farm deals reached 79 000 and farm deals totaling 205 960. The Stoten to Whitfield transaction covers Clark and Henley's Addition to Carthage lots 119 120 121 122 with 35 feet off the south side of lot 119.
Miss Jeannine Terhune accompanied by her parents Mr and Mrs Albert Terhune and family and Jim Terhune with Miss Fran Way of Indianapolis visited Taylor University at Upland Indiana on Sunday Jim Terhune left Monday for Indiana University at Bloomington to study journalism for his master’s degree this year

Tom Tucker of Carthage reports to Indiana University for the I U Marching Hundred Band camp. About 150 candidates train, swelling to 172 by the Sept 22 home opener against Kansas State. Kellis Veach of Carthage resumes studies as a junior in Bloomington.
