The Parent-Teacher Organization will honor Carthage School teachers with a pitch in supper on Tuesday evening September 13 at 6 30 p m in the Community Center. Parents are urged to bring well filled baskets and meet the teaching staff. PTO meetings will run the second Tuesday of each month all school year.
Mrs Al Stapp was elected president of the Carthage Band Boosters for 1960 61 at the September meeting held Tuesday night at the Carthage school building During the business meeting Mrs Albert Terhune presided The group voted to buy new majorette outfits and sponsor a candy drive in November Election of officers named Mrs Al Stapp president Mrs Finley Smith vice president and Mrs Ralph McClurg secretary treasurer
The Morristown Lions Club hosts the second annual tractor pulling event Saturday at 9 a.m. sponsored by the South Eastern Indiana Tractor Pulling Association. Eligible are previous district winners with about 120 entries expected. fish fry and refreshments will be served.
The Cub Scout Fisheraree will be Sunday Sept 11 at four o’clock at Dr George McNabe’s lake south of Carthage. Each Cub must have his father with him and bring a cane pole with bubber and a can of worms. Mothers invited at five o’clock with 2 packages of hot dogs and 2 packages of buns. Cubs qualifying will receive their badges at a campfire ceremony following dinner.
Den No. 2 gathered at Mrs. Virginia Whitfield home on Wednesday. Three boys completed Wolf and Bear badges and played Tricks with Sticks and a running race before Mike Joseph led prayers and refreshments were served. Denner Max Dewees.
The Carthage Kappa Kappa Sigma Sorority will sponsor a Style Show and public card party next Thursday at the Carthage Community Center starting at 7:30 p.m. The public is invited. prizes and refreshments will be provided.
Mrs Omar Heim entertained twelve members of the Friends Church Junior Choir to a picnic lunch and outing at New Castle Memorial Park last Wednesday. Mrs Ralph McClurg and Mrs James Dalrymple accompanied the children on the trip.
Rush County Fair Board members are reminded of the meeting on Wednesday evening September 14. Reports on the 1960 fair will be given and president Ertle Price urges all members to attend.
David Geise of Rushville helps at the State Fair in the Purdue building exhibition "4H In Action" by demonstrating plow and mower parts and Tractor Maintenance. The booth, sponsored by Standard Oil and the Farm Implement Dealers Association, showcases crafts and foods set up by State Extension staff from Purdue.
Mr and Mrs Nelson Cook visited Mrs Flora Culter near Nameless Creek last Thursday. Ralph Pearson attended the National Field Dog Trials in Kenton Ohio from Friday to Tuesday. Labor Day weekend guests included Mr and Mrs Stanley Hawkins and sister Mrs William Kinnett and Mr Kinnett of Dillsboro. Mr and Mrs Jack Moore and their son of Pendleton were Sunday guests of Mrs Lillian Moore.
Plans for fall sports across seven county schools were drawn by coaches. The first cross country meet to crown the county champion is October 5 at Arlington. Baseball games run Tuesdays and Fridays at 3 30 with a county tourney starting September 30. tourney drawings set September 22. Milroy defends baseball title.
Rush County 4-H members excel at the state fair swine and sheep events. Hank Godby of Center Township won the champion Landrace barrow and other top finishes include first in heavyweight Landrace barrow and litter, plus a gilt placing. Several Branams, Linvilles, Jackman, Johnson, Snedegar, Diana and Perry Stanley, Dean Thompson, and Louis White earned ribbons across Landrace, Yorkshire, Chester White, Hampshire, Berkshire, and Angus classes. Open Western Horse Show saw Clayton Woosley place fourth in Pet and Pony 50 inches and over.
Indiana's 1960 highway program nears record status with nearly 58 million dollars in signed contracts. Bids opened for an additional 12 million in road and bridge work, boosting the year total toward over 90 million. Open Interstate routes exceed 175 miles with major segments nearing completion. Supporters tout safer, cheaper travel on new controlled access routes.
Rush County 4H members earned blue and red ribbons for their display projects in the 4H Exhibit Hall. Crafts winners include Nancy Norris blue Janie Power red Amy Sue Addison blue Harriett Kuhn red Kathy Power blue Sharon Smith blue. Clothing winners include Brenda Norris blue Sarah Alexander blue Judy Finney red Carol Brad blue.
Kellis R Veach of Carthage is among 200 IU freshmen who will attend the freshman camp at McCormick's Creek State Park September 9 to 11. Sponsored by the YMCA and YWCA with the IU Freshman Division, the program features talks by deans and faculty, discussions, and religious services. Co chairs are Ronald Balsbaugh of Lafayette and Rita Tidd of Indianapolis.
The Carthage American Legion schedules a meeting on Wednesday September 14 at 8 p.m. at the Community Center to discuss post affairs and events.
Funeral services were held Tuesday for Mrs Martha Carson Lafuse 73 mother of Lewis Lafuse at Fosdick Funeral Home Liberty. She died Saturday at Reid Memorial Hospital Richmond. Survivors include husband Walter Lafuse two sons Lewis Carthage Eugene Lafuse Richmond daughter Mrs Robert Tubesing Richmond three brothers Roy Carson Frank Wright Carson two sisters Mrs Chester Maze Brownsville Mrs Hazel Williamson Mrs Elbert Winter Liberty and 11 grandchildren.
Floyd Hiner of Rush County dominates corn awards with Indiana 844 Parent Seed on a ten-car display at the Indiana State Fair. The 60 year old Center Township resident has earned multiple top honors including World and International titles since his 1917 debut. He has been Indiana Corn King in 1936 1937 1959 and earned World titles in Toronto 1956 and reserve champion there in 1959.
Mr and Mrs Rex Edwards and son Jeff returned home Monday night from a nine day vacation spent at Lake Shafer. Mr and Mrs Fletcher Edwards were guests there until last Wednesday and Russell Shutt Jr and Tom Sparks were guests from Wednesday until Monday. During their stay Mr and Mrs Jerry Edwards were guests one day.
Two hundred forty two incoming Purdue freshmen were chosen for the Freshman Leadership Camp opening September 8 at the Ross Civil Engineering Camp along the Wabash River. Arthur L. Tichenor will lead with 35 upperclass leaders guiding discussions, activities, and meals through September 11. Rush County youths Louis White, George Tevis, and David Scott are among the selectees.
Mr and Mrs James Whitfield and their family spent from Thursday until Labor Day evening on a camping trip to Spring Mills State Park.
The Republican State Caravan resumes and will cover the entire state by election day, November 8. Campaign leaders pose at mobile headquarters with re election seekers including Supreme Court Judge Harold E. Actor State Appellate Judge John M. Ryan Attorney General Edwin K. Steers Mrs Dorothy Gardner state auditor candidate Charles O Hendricks secretary of state Robert E Hughes lieutenant governor candidate Richard O Ristine and Lieutenant Governor Parker.
The Carthage Better Business Association met at noon on Tuesday in the Hoosier Man or dining room with Bob Winters presiding. Parvel Moore presented the minutes and treasurer’s report as several old and new items were discussed. Future meetings are scheduled for the first Tuesday after the first Monday of each month at 12 o'clock noon.
At a town board meeting Ralph McClarnon was chosen to fill the unexpired term of Lawrence Apple who moved to Cicero Indiana. Noah Leisure’s name was also presented. The vacancy concerned the Sixth Ward on the Council and all other routine matters were discussed with bills allowed.
Gulfport Miss Anne Myer Campbell daughter of Mr and Mrs Alfred Campbell formerly of Carthage now Oviedo Fla has been accepted for admission to Gulf Park College. She is expected to arrive for registration on September 14 joining more than 260 students from about 25 states and several foreign countries at the Gulf Coast college midway between New Orleans and Mobile. Opened in 1921 the college begins its 39th year offering the final two years of high school and the first two years of college.
Rush County 4H members excel in multiple divisions at the State Fair. Edward Meyer leads with top marks in gold medal beef and shorthorn and Hereford entries. Larry Angle earns several top finishes in Angus. Ed ward Meyer also shines in heifers with reserve champion Shorthorn. Swine, lamb, poultry, entomology, soil conservation, and garden projects show numerous blue ribbons, reds, and pinks for a wide slate of youth exhibitors. Local youths John Spuller, Diana Stanley, Rebecca Norvell, and others tally multiple ribbon awards across livestock, crops, and forestry displays while Junior Horseshoe results list top placements for Marvin Heim, Ronnie Fannin, and Jim Peck.
Rushville hosts the Fourteenth Annual Southeastern Indiana District 4H Fat Steer Show and Sale at the Rush County Fair Grounds on Saturday September 10 1960. Some 202 steers entered by 114 4H Club members from 11 counties will be weighed and judged with prizes banners rosettes and trophies from Kroger Abercrombie Jewelry and breed associations. Gerald Clodfelter will judge. sale overseen by Indianapolis Marketing Association and Rush County Chamber of Commerce.
