Judge Henley and Mr. and Mrs. P. J. Sattler and Mrs. Verna S. Hill made a business trip to Green field Tuesday. Mrs. Ervin L. Renegar of Arlington visited her sister Mrs. Herman Jones of New Castle last week.
A. J. Carr, Republican candidate for joint senator from Rush, Shelby, and Fayette counties, is profiled. The image shows him in U S Marine Corps service during World War I. He rose from engineer's helper to foreman in a large paper plant and is now vice president of the Columbia Envelope Co and sales manager of the George Swift Co. Carr is a Friends church member, Mason, BPOE, Indiana Engineering Society member, past American Legion commander, and registered professional engineer. He lives in Carthage.
News arrives of the death of Mrs. Myrtle Talbert, sister of Mr. Harry Talbert of Morristown. A Hanover township native, 56, she lived in Los Angeles for 32 years. Survived by sister in law Mrs. Belle Warfield of Manila. Funeral services were held at Mr. Talbert’s home.
The annual fall homecoming and quarterly birthday dinner are jointly held at Hannegan Christian church on Sunday October 18. The day also marks the end of the first week of a two week revival led by Rev. and Mrs. Walter Crawley of Falmouth with a pulpit Bible dedication. Revival services continue each night next week at 7:00 except Saturday. opening hour adjusted for work and weather.
Miss Anne Monroe of the Lux Company will demonstrate proper washing methods at Goodman Department Store in Shelbyville Thursday Friday and Saturday. If an article is safe in water it is safe in Lux. Monroe is an authority on washing and will discuss washing problems. Everyone is invited to attend.
A one day meeting of Christian Missionary societies will be held in Rushville on Monday November 2. Rev W H Funderburk leads the Rushville arrangements with representation from Bartholomew Decatur Fayette Franklin Jennings Ripley Rush Shelby Union and Wayne counties. An interesting program has been planned for the conference.
Prof. Howard E. Hamlin assistant professor of physiology at Ohio State University will speak at the Carthage Friends church Friday evening October 16 at 7 30 as part of a Indiana Ohio tour. He discusses temperance education and has addressed large audiences in multiple cities. He is author of Alcohol Speaks to Youth and will offer new facts on the topic.
Betty DeSchipper of Carthage has been named to the sophomore business staff of the Arbutus year book at Indiana University. Twelve sophomores were chosen for the business staff and a like number for the editorial staff based on grades experience and interest in the year book drive. Selection was by a committee including Dean Edmonson Dean Wells Ray Fox Ward Biddle Jean McGriff and others.
Rushville district Queen Esther circles discuss a banquet at First M E church in Shelbyville on October 19. The Garnet Fuqua circle met at Mrs O F Fuqua home with a weiner roast and devotions by Nellie Howe and Martha Miller. Julia Newcomb led the business session. next meet with Harriet Etchison on the second Monday in November.
The G. O. P. motor caravan paused in Morristown Monday afternoon with foods from foreign countries on display. It was joined by Shelby county candidates, Clarence M. Brown of Richmond, Al J. Carr of Carthage, and John F. Trimble, who led the tour. Lunch followed at Rock Way Cafe before music and talks. The convoy moved on toward Fountaintown.
Printing of 7 175 000 ballots for the November 3 election began Wednesday at 12 01 AM. Parke Beadle state election board clerk said about 40 watchers, evenly split between Democrats and Republicans, were placed on guard to prevent tampering. Ballots were to be shipped to Indianapolis on traction cars.
The country wide poll shows Alf Landon leading Franklin D Roosevelt 27 states to 12 with nine weeks of voting ending October 10. National totals reach 522,083 votes for Landon and 340,053 for Roosevelt, with five states extremely close and final returns due next week.
Funeral services were held at Walnut Ridge Friends church and cemetery for Mrs. Melvin Seeley on Friday afternoon October 16 at 2:00 p m. Survivors include husband Melvin Seeley, children Mrs. Claude Miller Carl Seeley and Mrs. Oren Miller, a sister Mrs. Everett Nugent and six grandchildren Robert Dale Doris Ann Seeley Oren Jr Imogene Donald Wesley and Alta Marie Miller.
The Kappa Kappa Sigma organization presented a twenty five dollar check for new books to the Henry Henley library association. The gift will be used immediately and the library group publicly thanks the sorority for the contribution. Grace H Porter, Sec.
Ripley Homemakers met October 8 at Lottie McManus home with 19 members. The nominating committee presented officers: Stella Siler president, Henry Stinger vice president, Nell White secretary treasurer, Mattie Publow director, Bertha Newsom senior leader, Ruth Gray junior leader. Next meeting set for November 19 at Mrs Guy Ewing home.
A tri county Anti New Deal rally is set for the High School gym in Knightstown on Tuesday October 20 at 7 30 p m. Wm Jenner Republican state convention keynote speaker and Indiana's youngest Republican Senator will deliver the address with Mrs Georgia Duddington as the lady speaker. Hancock Rush and Henry counties voters are invited.
A community notice invites women to a Republican gathering at Mrs. Ella Nelson’s home next Monday at 3:00 pm. County chairman Mrs. Brown will lead an informal discussion to help attendees vote intelligently, with all women welcome and invited to share with neighbors.
The Young Republicans of the 10th District plan a Springer for Governor Dance at Mt. Lawn Park near New Castle on Wednesday night October 21. Gene Kellam's Rhythm Vendors from Franklin college provide music. Admission is $1 per couple for 9 to 12 p.m.
James Fenimore Cooper's immortal tale is brought to the Auditorium theatre on Wednesday October 21 in a filmization that preserves early American pioneer drama. Scenes include Uncas guiding Cora, the Fort William Henry siege, and a Huron war dance, promising a memorable evening.
Mrs. Hester Jones of Gwynneville died at her home last Thursday at 4 45 p m at age 83, born April 20 1853. She married John Jones on February 14 1877 and belonged to Gwynneville Christian church. Funeral held Saturday at home with Rev Burns officiating. burial in Asbury cemetery. Niece Mrs O O Olinger of Morristown survives.
Miss Bernadine Herkless daughter of Mr and Mrs John Herkless of Carthage will wed Mr Stuart Morgan son of Mr Ray Morgan of Knights town Friday evening at 6 30 at the Christian church parsonage with Rev Holwager officiating Dr and Mrs McNabb the only attendants The bride to be works in Dr McNabb office and Morgan is a chemist for the Container corporation Afterward the couple will take a short wedding trip.
A telegram from Finley H. Gray U S congressman announces a 170000 allotment for rural electrification in Rush county. Lines of the Rush County REMC will extend briefly into Shelby and Fayette counties. Gray, a notable rural electrification leader, led the effort to secure the money and contracts for the local project will be let in the coming days.
A Tuesday night rally at the Auditorium theatre in Carthage drew a large responsive crowd. Clarence M. Brown of Richmond spoke on federal spending and debt, while George Barnard of New Castle delivered the principal address. Mitchell's Little German Band provided entertainment.
The Morristown Christian Church holds its annual homecoming on Sunday October 18 with a noon basket dinner in the basement and a 2:00 pm program featuring a musical finale and a service for the final payment on the church annex. Brother Bruce Kershner of Butler University leads the afternoon, followed by visitors, finishing with an ordination for newly elected deacons. Everyone is invited to attend all or part of the programs.
