A truck driven by Karl Beam, 23, of Route 3 Osgood, struck a bridge on a county road about a mile south of Charlottesville at 5 p m Tuesday. Beam sustained a head bump after pulling over to avoid another car that fled the scene. The truck suffered about 300 dollars in front-end damage.
The Community Betterment Association met last Friday evening at 7 30 after a three week recess for Fall Festival activities. The financial report shows the group near halfway to its goal to purchase the Black Bear property. The next meeting is set for Friday evening October 14 at 7 30 p.m. in the Community Center. Attendance is encouraged.
Carthage residents recall a deadly clash on the Black Bear and a late August temporary victory. The Community Betterment Association has not yet removed the source of the conflict, though response has been gratifying and supporters vow continued effort led by Parvel Moore.
John Nelson of Arlington spoke on the county school reorganization plan at the Carthage PTO meeting held Tuesday evening at the Carthage Community Center. Albert Terhune chaired the session with devotions by Rev. Harry Cooper and a secretary’s report by Mrs. Jack Rhoades. Plans were set for a Halloween party for local school children. Refreshments followed.
Mr and Mrs Wilbur McCorkle and Mr and Mrs Ralph Mosier came home last week after a two week fishing trip at Bull Shoals Lake and Conway Lake in Arkansas. Mr and Mrs Forrest Beck joined them for five days at Bull Shoals Lake.
Among participants from Carthage at the band contest in Indianapolis on Saturday were Mrs. Hubert Hunt, Mrs. Albert Terhune, Mrs. Marie Tribby, Mrs. Kenneth Bush, Mrs. Raymond Kennedy and daughter, Mrs. Virginia Wells, Mrs. Ethel Collins, Mrs. H. A. Ruby, Mrs. Forrest Marshall, and Miss Janet Hunt.
Mrs. George Apple is in Henry County Hospital on Tuesday with pneumonia. Mrs. Jack B. Moore of Pendleton, formerly of Carthage, suffered second degree burns when her clothing caught fire while burning trash Monday and is hospitalized at St. Johns Hospital in Anderson.
Mrs. Lee J. Garver’s Group II organ and piano students will perform at Center Christian Church on October 16 at 2 30 p m with the public invited. A Rushville man Cecil Richman 28 was badly burned in a Greenfield warehouse explosion while preparing to remove gasoline from a sprayer used to paint highway lines. Everett Thompson 42 was treated and released. Leroy Earlywine 28 also involved. Damage included a destroyed truck and about 50 000 in building losses with ruined office records.
Seventeen members and five guests attended the regu lar Lions Club dinner at the Community Center. Hubert Hunt presided after the meal as Jack Rhoades read the roll and minutes. The group discussed several matters and praised local businesspeople for assisting ride ticket sales during the Fall Festival. Wendell Kirkpatrick spoke on school re organization plans as the evening program.
The state to release 198 quail in all counties totaling 18 216 birds from Muscatatuck State Park and Game Farm. After quail, 108 cock pheasants per in 58 northern counties totaling 6 264 and 60 per in 34 southern counties totaling 2 040. Additional releases include 12 000 cock pheasants on public hunting areas and 4 500 bob white quail on these areas.

Members and guests of the Rush County Junior Republican Club attended a wiener roast and record hop at the Conservation Clubhouse last Saturday night. About 75 people were present. Bill Green, the club president, announced a regular meeting at GOP Headquarters for 7:30 p.m. Wednesday to discuss Republican and Democratic party principles.
The Alpha Beta Chapter met at Allene Jones's home in Dublin on Tuesday evening. A report on the September executive board meeting was presented along with summaries from summer workshops. A panel on the Teacher Training Program, moderated by Gladys Smith, featured Mary Ellen Pearson, Josephine Alexander and Alta Carfield of Carthage.

Kenneth Charles Gabbard aged 19 of Knightstown and Dixie Lee Riggs aged 21 of Carthage obtained a marriage license. He works in a factory and she is employed as a drug clerk.
Mrs. Jack Rhoades of Carthage hosted a Stanley Party Monday evening with twelve guests. Mrs. Loriie Rhodes of Indianapolis attended and displayed various articles during the social hour. Refreshments were served.
The Carthage Friends Meeting will observe Family and Rally Day on Sunday October 16. The united service begins with Bible School at 9 30 and continues through the worship hour at 10 30. A carry in dinner follows at noon with choruses led by Virginia Wells and a talk by former pastor Everett Chapman. Recognition will be given to the largest family present.

Micky Shay Palmer nine day old son of William H and Carolyn Grocox Palmer Rushville died at seven p.m. Saturday in Riley Hospital Indianapolis Born in Rush Memorial Hospital September 29 he is survived by twin brother Ricky Wayne Palmer and step brother Gregory Stoner at home four grandparents and four great grandparents all of Rushville and nearby Mays with link to the Palmer and Grocox families.
Republican Crawford Parker assails Democrat Jack Kennedy for poor Senate attendance and disarmament stance during a Taylorsville rally at the high school gym. He cites Kennedy's absence from subcommittee meetings since 1958 and 179 unrecorded votes in Congress, arguing Kennedy would govern by proxy.

Alonzo S. Rhodes, 80, longtime Center Township farmer and carpenter, died at 5:30 p.m. Sunday at his home in New Castle after six months of ill health. Born October 10, 1879 in Texas, he lived in Mays community most of his life before moving to New Castle 13 years ago. Survived by his widow Anna Alexander, two sons Earl and Charles Rhodes, a stepson Joseph Alexander, a sister Grace Rhodes, two grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at Wyatt Moore Memorial with entombment in East Hill Shrine Mausoleum.
