School notes recount seniors placing orders for class rings expected by November first. Various students and staff attended district meetings while activities span English etymology projects, a 4 H demonstration, and upcoming basketball and softball games.
The Carthage Auditorium Theatre began last Saturday with Will Rogers in To Busy To Work. This Saturday and Sunday features Hold Me Tight with James Dunn and Sally Hiler and a comedy The Tamale Wonder. Beginning next Wednesday night Family Night offers 10 cent tickets, with regular weekend shows reduced to 20 and 10 cents. New sound equipment is noted as distinct and quality.
Mrs. Sallee Stager received part of the fish Henry Stager caught aboard C. A. Agar’s yacht last weekend. Henry, purchasing agent, fished with Agar Container Corp president C. A. Agar. Mrs. Stager called the fish mighty fine.
Mass meeting planned for Saturday at 1 30 p m in the Claypool Hotel Indianapolis to decide action to enforce Indiana’s 1 50 property tax limitation law Speakers include George Fields Joseph Chay Claude Cline Martin Hugg and Calvin L Payne director of the National Association of Real Estate Boards The call emphasizes no repeal but firm action by taxpayers and county boards with a state tax commission hearing appeals next week by counties and strong guidance from leaders in the 1 50 movement
The United Civil Service Commission announces exams for Junior Librarian in penal institutions, Junior Tabulating Machine Operator, Card Punch Operator, Flat-Bed Bookkeeping Operator, and Assistant to Forestry Technician with salaries from 1 260 to 4 600 dollars. Some positions in Washington or field service. Deductions up to 15 percent plus retirement. State apportionment details noted. Roy Herkless spent Wednesday afternoon in Rushville on a business visit, meeting local officials and discussing potential commerce opportunities.
Alvin Winfield Gardner, long time post office custodian, retires Sept 30 after about 16 years in service. Born into slavery in North Carolina, he plans to pursue music teaching guitar and other instruments and to handle odd jobs around the office. He recalls family history, migration north in 1872, schooling and community life, and currently lives at 447 North Greenwood with his wife and daughter. He is active in Park Street A M E church and the Colored Knights of Pythias.
Foundation for a large gasoline tank finished. The two compartment tank will hold 20 000 gallons and sits just west of two existing tanks. Built by Plummer Oil Co. it will store a third grade of gasoline.

Mary E. Morris 87 died at her home at 1:30 a m after long illness and a ten day critical period. Born November 20 1845 in Springboro Ohio she moved to Rush County sixty years ago and lived here. Survived by daughter Joanna Gibson grandson Morris Gibson brother A J Miller Fountain City and sister Eliza J Mosier Clyde Kansas. Funeral 10 30 Friday at daughter’s home Rev Crawley officiating. Burial Riverside cemetery.
Secretary of War George H. Dern will speak at a Reserve Officers of Indiana dinner on Saturday October 14 at 7 pm at the Columbia Club in Indianapolis. Major J H Davison announced the event which honors multiple generals admirals and colonels from the Indiana Military Area and other services.
The Carthage Knightstown pike is closed this week for stone and asphalt application. Workers haul stone from the railroad to the pike in county trucks and several men are employed unloading it. The road will be completed soon and open to traffic delivering hard surfaced roads for Carthage and nearby areas both north and south.
Work began last week on a filling station across from the bank. The lot has been paved and the basement and oil drain pit excavations finished. Crews are now wiring and plumbing while plans include a full line of Diamond products and three pumps.
Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Moore and daughter Jerry Ann and Miss Dorothy Herkless spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Herkless and family at Circleville Ohio.
Worship service last Sunday was pleasing with Rev Pickett leading the meeting read reverently by Herman Porter and others. The Ministry and Oversight group met at the pastor’s home to discuss church needs and plans for the coming year. Rev Pickett is strengthening and may take on more leadership soon. Next Sunday includes Sunday School at 9:30 and Morning Meeting at 10:39. no evening service as members join the Christian church.
The Evrworth League held a rally night in Arlington with a weiner roast and talk. The Mens Bible Class reorganized at the parsonage and will meet monthly. The Foreign Missionary Society met at Mrs. Grace Foust’s for lunch and their regular gathering. Rally Day and Home Coming set for October 22. Next Sunday services begin with 9:30 Sunday school and 10:35 morning worship, Epworth League at 6 and 7 p.m. All welcome.
The East St. Christian church marked a large anniversary and sale with a long daytime queue. A dinner and sale netted about 400 dollars, and a pair of tams sold multiple times for a total of 21.75. A Century of Progress Parade featured antique touring vehicles up to a 1933 automobile.
The National Convention of War Mothers convened at the Claypool hotel last week and elected Mrs Stella Ochultree of Connersville unanimously to lead for the coming year. Her politics and social work are noted and she is described as a cousin of the late Ben Norris of Rushville.
Nathan Poole aged 76 died recently. He was the father of Mrs. W. O. Moore and lived with the Moore family at times. He was buried in Muncie on Sunday.
Mrs John Nelson who underwent an appendectomy at Major hospital Shelbyville last week is reported to be very much improved.
