Bertram Howard Post of the American Legion launches a year long membership campaign after a Tuesday night meeting. In line with a National decision the post opens eligibility to all World War II service members including both sexes. Wives of active service members and parents may enroll on behalf of those still away.
Donald R. Hughes, acting fish and game director of Indiana Department of Conservation, announced the open season for wild ducks, geese, brant and coot will run from October 13 through December 31. Woodcock season runs October 15 to October 30 while rails and gallinules (except coot) season began September 1 and ends November 30. All dates are Federal order inclusive.

For four days October 18 to 21 Murat Theatre presents the world famous Uncle Tom's Cabin in Indianapolis in a twentieth century musical version with Stephen Foster music. Mario Cozzi stars as Uncle Tom with twenty three musical numbers and famed characters from Harriet Beecher Stowe's novel.
Cecil Rhodes age 52 died suddenly Saturday evening at his home in Hartford City. He lived in Carthage for years and worked at a paper mill. Rhodes and his son Chester owned a garage in Hartford City. He was a brother of Mrs. Frank Webb of this place.

Mrs Freq White and Edgar White join Miss Mamie Jessup and Miss Hettie Hunt from Charlottesville Friends church at a Friendg Yearly Meeting in Richmond on Thursday. Miss Hutt, formerly of Charlottesville, lives now in North Weare New Hampshire.
Mrs Clarence Tuttle underwent major surgery at City hospital in Indianapolis on Tuesday morning at 10 o clock. She is reported as doing nicely.
The junior class theatre party went on a hay ride to Rushville last Friday night but returned without seeing the show. The theatre was full when they arrived and they returned to Mrs. Alice Fortney's home for refreshments and phonograph music. Only four students were absent.
Farmers warned to avoid feeding soft or moldy corn to hogs this fall to reduce cholera risk. The American Foundation for Animal Health urges light introduction of new corn and close observation for digestive distress. Immunization against cholera is stressed as a priority this autumn.
Sen. Wayne Morse of Oregon, a national authority on labor issues, will be an America's Town Meeting speaker for the October 4 radio broadcast. He will argue the negative on whether the Full Employment Bill threatens private industry.
The Human Adventure on MBS explores tuberculosis surgery and X rays with Socrates in upcoming dramas. After broadcasting the Einstein Theory with Clifton Fadiman the series drew over 7 000 transcript requests and 400 more daily.
In a crowded Broadway restaurant Quipmaster Bob Hawk overheard a Marine and his girl admit they had no reservation. He immediately offered them his table saying they made the reservation before going overseas in his cordial manner.
About two hundred Ripley residents attended last Saturday’s Lions auction and film at the Community Center Theatre despite heavy rain and cold. The 17 piece high school band performed indoors after weather disrupted outdoor plans, and the fund-raiser grossed about $150 per chairman Walter Chonau.

Fitch brothers, one in the navy, returned home at Wooten then joined a troop train to Norfolk and a transport with 2,000 men to Pearl Harbor. Capt. Frederick Fitch, with a 15 day extension, plans to visit his mother Mrs. Martha Fitch after.
The Indiana Department of Conservation reports 4.5 million trees available, with 3 million allocated for farmer sales. Rules include minimum orders of 100 trees, buyers cover transportation, a 25 cent packing charge for orders under 1,000, and payment on receipt. Species include red, white and Virginia pines among others. roughly one million of each pine species ready for shipment at $5 to $10 per thousand. Application blanks are at the county extension office.
Rain halted lima bean harvest leaving about half the crop threshed and vines standing in Ripley fields. Workers expect to resume within days as weather clears. Mr. Ewing, contracted for a canning company, reports 85 to 98 percent grade and notes yield is better than early estimates but not as strong as some seasons. A future frost could ruin about thirty tons of the crop.
S-Sgt John M DeSchipper and his wife arrived Tuesday night from Cherry Point North Carolina for a two day visit with his mother Mrs Emma De Schipper and the family. The couple left for North Carolina on Thursday.

The 38th annual convention of the Sixth District Federated Clubs met on Wednesday October 5 at the Christian church in Morristown with Mrs Ellwood Morris presiding. Officers elected include Bayard Baker Carthage president and Goldie Nigh Morristown second vice president.
