Sleeping sickness strikes again among horses in Midwest
An unexpected fall outbreak of horse sleeping sickness spreads across midwestern and southwestern states causing higher death losses, especially among unvaccinated colts and young horses. The American Foundation for Animal Health notes some areas see steeper fall losses than summer, with one state up nearly 50 percent from last year. Vaccination efforts aim to curb further outbreaks as authorities monitor a new regional trend.
